Key Initiatives

Unifying Community Design Plans - In Fiscal Year 2005, a County Cultural Forum for municipalities was held at the Pembroke Pines Artspark, featuring a presentation on the new Community Design Guidebook and a discussion of the public art design outreach program. In Fiscal Year 2006, a group composed of all County agencies with cultural and historical design services will collaborate on creating a unified plan by identifying key plan components of the various design plans.

Shared Calendar Database - Since November 2002, the Cultural Division, in conjunction with the Office of Information Technology, has been the lead partner and administrator in creating a shared calendar database for the purpose of convenient public information on arts and culture which will assist in supporting our region as a global tourism destination. Prior to the establishment of the shared calendar database, cultural events were listed separately in a variety of venues. The new database will assist in eliminating duplication of work. Long-range plans include options for permission-based email newsletters and a feature allowing the public to access only the type of information they want.

Increase attendance and expand opportunities in arts and culture - Broward County staff will develop opportunities for life-long learning in the arts by expanding the Education and Community Development Grant Program (ECD). This will significantly increase the number of cultural arts classes provided and ensure that the four artsparks implement exemplary arts education programming. Providing residents with opportunities to study the arts in their own neighborhood is an excellent way to foster economic and social development throughout the County.

Preserve and promote historical and heritage resources - Broward County staff will benchmark and research the methods utilized by other major historical, heritage-rich locations to develop and promote their identities and history to residents and visitors. An action plan will be developed for Broward County to promote its local historical heritage to residents and visitors.
