Broward County Commission Goal 5
Regional Redevelopment
Develop a collaborative regional policy on redevelopment that inspires inter-jurisdictional partnerships, economically competitive standards, and clarity among all stakeholders.
| Promoting redevelopment in collaboration with 31 municipalities is a major priority for the Broward County Commission. As the County approaches total build-out, redevelopment efforts must be focused on well-planned projects which will provide a positive return on investment, promote cost-effective utilization of public resources, and attract high-quality development. |

Key Initiatives
Broward County Community Design Guidebook - In June 2005, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners approved the Countywide Community Design Guidebook. The guidebook identifies a comprehensive set of strategies for enhancing the beauty, uniqueness and livablity of our community. These strategies identify various ways local governments and builders can impact the major design elements in our urban environment, including architecture, urban design, transportation, landscaping and graphic design (signage), to create a stronger “Sense of Place.” Work is already underway in Pompano Beach to prepare guidelines for the historic downtown area.
Transit-Oriented and Mixed-Use Land Use Categories on the Broward County Land Use Plan - The Board has established three new mixed-use land use categories: Transit-Oriented Corridor (TOC), Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and Mixed Use - Residential (MU-R) to encourage transit-oriented and mixed-use developments. The categories will allow the County and its 31 municipalities to direct public and private investment into existing commercial corridors by promoting mass transit and limiting additional vehicular congestion.
Governmental Center Downtown Campus - The Governmental Center Downtown Campus is envisoned as a public/private redevelopment project on three blocks in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The purpose is to create a “Sense of Place” through the development of a mixed-use project. In June 2005, the Board authorized a nationally recognized public/private partnership consultant to assist the Board in realizing this vision.
Redevelopment Capital Program (RCP) - Promoting redevelopment in collaboration with municipalities is a major priority for the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The Board established the RCP to provide a funding mechanism for Broward County’s participation in municipal and unincorporated area redevelopment activities.
