Board of County Commissioners
Five-Year Workplan

Fiscal Years 2006-2010

Message from the Board
of County Commissioners

By 2030, Broward County’s population is expected to be 2.5 million. As one of the nation’s most desirable places to live and a top global destination, our growth is inevitable. It is our mission to ensure that we are prepared for this growth, and able to maintain high quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors.

Growth has brought with it increasing diversity in our population. One of the fastest growing segments of the population today is school-aged children; however, as we near 2030 and the “baby boom” generation reaches retirement age, the senior population will nearly double. These changing demographics present challenges for our community.

Since the 1990s, Broward County residents have benefited from one of the highest economic growth rates in the state. Our service-oriented economy is supported by the second largest labor force in Florida. Yet we are challenged with more residents in the labor force than jobs, and a shrinking supply of undeveloped land for expansion. Median family incomes here are higher than those statewide, yet 11 percent of residents live in poverty, including many children and seniors.

The strategic goals outlined in this Five-Year Workplan acknowledge the impact of growth on Broward County in eight important areas. In conjunction with the Annual Operating Budget, action plans have been developed to address each area. Results will be reported on a quarterly basis.

With a focused effort on attaining these goals, we can look forward to a bright future, and proudly maintain our place as one of the most desirable communities in the nation.
