How Can You Get Involved
·         Volunteer at the Animal Care Shelter (Must be at least 16 years old)
·         Help at offsite events (Must be at least 16 years old)
·         Be a Foster Parent
o    Minors (17 or younger) must be supervised by an adult.

The volunteer program offers opportunities for you to help our community’s dogs and cats in unique and special ways, including:
 
Customer Services Counselor
 

Objective: To assist Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s Customer Service Representatives in hosting and greeting shelter patrons, completing administrative/shelter “front desk” tasks, facilitating adoption visits, assist with walking patrons through stray areas to look for their missing animal, and assist with other miscellaneous animal-related tasks.
 
Duties:
  • Ensures that patrons are served promptly and treated respectfully.
  • Receives the proper information on Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s animals, programs and services.
  • Directs customer traffic accordingly and appropriately.

Office Assistant

Objective: Assist fun and friendly Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division Administrative staff with important day- to-day operations. Assist with administrative tasks that may be related to fundraising or special events.
 
Duties:
  • Filing, copying, and scanning.
  • Data entry.
  • Special projects related to event planning.
  • Desk-top publishing.
  • General office projects.
 
Adoption/Kennel Assistant

Objective: To assist with the with the kennel upkeep and food preparation.
 
Duties:
  • Keeps kennel runs and holding areas clean and sanitized.
  • Prepares newspaper and cat litter boxes for the cat holding areas.
  • Washes, dries and folds bedding.
  • Cleans food and water bowls.
  • Assists with the food preparation.
 
Animal Enrichment Assistant (Must be at least 18 years old)

Objective
: To provide the animals at Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center with their basic needs for physical, social, and mental enrichment during their time at the shelter. To help prevent stress, promote psychological well-being, and improve adoptability for animals in our care. This will be accomplished through exercise and positive interaction with the animals.
 
Duties:
  • Read animal body language and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain a calm and quiet attitude at all times - no loud talking, no agitated or quick movements.
  • Read and understand signage.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to verbal instruction of staff.
  • Interact with the public in a way that reflects Broward County Animal Care and Adoption's mission/values.
  • Conduct their duties without disrupting staff or clients.
  • Physically control the animals they are working with- walking dogs, carrying cats, etc.
 
Photographer/Artist

Objective
:  Obtain high-quality digital photographs of adoptable animals to attract potential adopters and enhance the appearance of the adoptable animals on Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s website.

Duties
:
  • Uses a digital camera to take high quality photographs of adoptable animals.
  • Retakes current photos that are of poorer quality, as directed.
  • Follows the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s animal handling and cleaning protocols.
  • Notifies Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s staff of any health and/or behavioral issues noted during interaction with the adoptable animals.
 
Photography Assistant

Objective
:  Assist the Animal Photography Volunteer in order to obtain high-quality digital photographs of the adoptable dogs and cats to attract potential adopters and enhance the appearance of the adoptable pets on Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s website.

Duties
:
  • Retrieves animals from their kennels and take them to the designated area to have the animal’s picture taken.
  • Assists the photographer by holding/distracting the animal while the animal’s picture is taken.
  • Cleans/prepares the room/area between each animal.
  • Follows the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s animal handling and cleaning protocols.
  • Notifies Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s staff of any health and/or behavioral issues noted during interaction with the adoptable animals.
 
Special Event Assistant

Objective
: Assist Broward County Animal Care and Adoption with adoption and community outreach events both on and off-site. 

Duties
:
  • Assists with event planning and preparation.
  • Communicates effectively via telephone and email.
  • Represents Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division in a positive and professional manner while conducting volunteer tasks.
  • Works well as part of a team.
  • Desire to work with event vendors, sponsors, donors and/or other volunteers to accomplish specific event-related tasks.
  • Walks dogs (must be at 18 years old), cleans up after the animals, makes sure that the animals are hydrated and cared for at adoption events. 
 
Groomer/Bather

Objective
: Assist Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division staff with preparing adoptable dogs to give them their best paw forward and help their chances of getting adopted.

Duties
:
  • Retrieves animals from their adoption kennels and take them to the designated grooming/bathing area.
  • Performs grooming/bathing activities.
  • Cleans/prepares the room/area between each animal.
  • Follows the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s animal handling and cleaning protocols.
  • Notifies Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division’s staff of any health and/or behavioral issues noted during interaction with the adoptable animals.

    How to Become a Volunteer

    Follow these easy steps:

    1. Read through the Volunteer Application Packet thoroughly.
    2. Complete and sign all the forms in the Volunteer Application Packet. Volunteers under the age of 18 must complete the Volunteer Parental Permission Form.
    3. Make a clear, legible copy of your photo identification. The following are acceptable forms of identification:
      • Driver License
      • U.S. Passport
      • State ID
      • Student ID (for minor volunteers without a driver license)
    4. Bring your completed application and photo ID with you to one of our volunteer orientations. This is mandatory for all volunteers. Applications will only be processed for those volunteers that attend orientation. You must RSVP with our Volunteer Coordinator to attend an upcoming orientation.  Space is limited.
    5. Pass a criminal background check.
    6. Complete Customer Service Training. This is required for all volunteers. Once you have attended an orientation and passed a background check you will be contacted by our Volunteer Coordinator to schedule Customer Service Counselor Training
