The Broward Cultural Division is dedicated to enhancing the cultural environment of Broward County through the development of the arts.
Established in 1979 by the Broward County Commission, the Council is the central coordinating agency for the arts, serving as liaison between cultural organizations, government agencies and the private sector. The 21-member Council recommends programs and the distribution of government and private resources for the visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, museums and festivals.
Each January the Broward Cultural Division adopts a list of goals following a December public workshop. The goals are from the Community Cultural Plan 2010—the council's ten-year plan. Sub Committees of the council are formed to establish objectives, strategies and budgets to meet the goals.
The goals for 2011 are as follows:
- Support County Goal #7 – Cultural Amenities and Recreation: Something for Everyone: Cultural Amenities and recreational services are accessible through the County from Sawgrass to Seagrass with emphasis on the rich cultural diversity of the community. Our citizens are able to blend work with play close to home because residents have services available to them with the opportunity to participate.
- Begin to implement the Community Cultural Plan 2020, focused on Cultural Diversity with Component plans for Cultural Tourism, Creative Economy, and Public Art, and an Alternative funding plan. Specific goal TBD.
- Obtain County Commission approval for a cultural diplomacy policy and program.
- Continue the process of developing a Workplace Giving Program. (#28)
- Implement the public relations campaign, “Faces of the Arts in Broward”. (#18)
- Improve community access to the public art collection. (#41)
- Develop a program of temporary public art projects to be distributed around the County. (#49)
