Lauderhill's Write Side Poets Are Featured In An HBO Documentary

Write Side PoetsBrave New Voices, airing at 11 pm Sunday nights beginning April 5, will chronicle the activities of youth poetry groups around the country participating in the HBO Def Poetry Jam. The April 12 episode will feature Lauderhill’s own Write Side Poets, who are based in the Lauderhill Arts Incubator at the intersection of NW 19 Street and NW 55 Avenue, just south of the old City Hall and the Lauderhill Boys and Girls Club.

The Write Side Poets, managed by Ray Dominguez, attract youths from all three South Florida counties to write and perform their poetry at the Incubator and in events and competitions around Florida and the country. You can see them live at the Incubator every Friday evening when the poets and a jazz ensemble perform beginning at 7 pm and Cinema Paradiso will hold a private screening by invitation only on Monday March 30 at 7 p.m. The Write Side Poets are offering 20 tickets by raffle at their location in Lauderhill every Friday and Saturday.

Good News For Business!

Americans for the ArtsRecently, Americans for the Arts released the 2009 Creative Industries Report , which offers a research-based approach to understanding the scope and economic importance of the arts. Broward County is home to 5,660 of arts-related businesses that employ 21,918 people. This is a 21 percent increase over 2008 statistics, in arts-related businesses, creating an additional 400 jobs within this industry in Broward.

Broward Cultural Division is thrilled to learn that creative businesses are a growing segment of our local economy. These statistics support a global trend that creative businesses will expand to support the knowledge-based economy. It shows that arts and culture has a much-needed place in any growing community.

The creative industries are comprised of businesses that create and distribute the arts including: museums and collections; performing arts; visual arts/photography; film, radio and TV; design and publishing; arts schools and services. These arts-centric businesses play an important role in building and sustaining economic vibrancy. They employ people, spend money locally, generate government revenue and are a cornerstone of tourism.

Artist Mary Lou Siefker's Artwork Exhibited at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood Int'l Airport

Lee Wagener GalleryBroward County Cultural Division’s Public Art and Design Program announces an art exhibition at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, by artist Mary Lou Siefker. The artworks, titled Journey Through Life with Paint, are displayed in the newly opened Lee Wagener Art Gallery of Terminal 2, through April 30, 2009.

Mary Lou Seifker has been a resident of Fort Lauderdale for more than three decades. She has taught painting and design at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton; and has worked as a docent in the education department at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University.

For the exhibition, Journey Through Life with Paint , Siefker says, “I was primarily painting landscapes when I began to explore the human form in my current series, Images , an ongoing body of work that I began in 1986. These ‘images,’ or ‘people shapes’ as I refer to them, are loosely figural in form, and emerge from the vibrant, teeming surfaces I create through the thick application of acrylic paint mixed with other media….My abstractions are emotional responses that come from within and are infused with universal themes dealing with human relationships, as well as education and mentoring.”

The Lee Wagener Art Gallery offers Broward County artists an excellent opportunity to exhibit their work in a prominent, pre-security, high-traffic area in Terminal 2 of the airport departure level that is accessible to the public. Artists are selected through the Public Art and Design Program and exhibits change every four months. The far end of the gallery has been reserved for the exhibition of video artworks from Broward County’s permanent art collection. Additionally, Tree Rain, by Broward-based artists Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, has been installed as the permanent video artwork.

Broward Cultural Division Receives Silver Addy Award

Addy Awards

Broward Cultural Division received a Silver ADDY® award from the Fort Lauderdale Advertising Federation in February for the production of the Cultural Quarterly fine arts online magazine.

Informing the population on arts, culture, history and attractions, Cultural Quarterly offers readers one of the most comprehensive cultural calendars in Broward County, and is a key to tourism in the area. Artists profiles, historical culture, mayor’s message, art news, arts committee member profiles, artist success stories, family fun, intriguing images and cultural close-ups are some of the intriguing and informative information you will find in this catchy and fluently-colored website.

Sponsored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the ADDY® Awards—often referred to as the Grammys of the South Florida advertising industry—honor excellence in advertising and cultivate the highest creative standards.

National Arts Strategies to Present Strategic Marketing Seminar for Arts Leaders

National Arts StrategiesNational Arts Strategies (NAS) announces an executive education seminar: Strategic Marketing , May 14 - 15, 2009. This program targets top artistic and management executives, board leaders, and representatives from not-for-profit, cultural organizations throughout South Florida, and will be held at the Adrienne Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. NAS offers a full scholarship throughout 2009 to participants of its Business of Art and Culture seminar series, including Strategic Marketing in Miami.

Presented by a leading faculty comprised of Anita Elberse, Ph.D. , Harvard Business School; Michael Norton, Ph.D. , Harvard Business School and Seminar Director, Jim Rosenberg , National Arts Strategies', Strategic Marketing explores systematic approaches for understanding customers, planning marketing strategies, and creating value for your community.

Scholarships: Through the support of their national network of funders, NAS is offering a full fellowship for all Business of Arts and Culture™ events in 2009. The 2009 Organization Fellowship covers the full tuition of $1250 for a team of up to five people. Organizations will be selected to participate in the seminar through a rolling application process, and all applicants must be received by close of business on April 3, 2009.

Cooperative Marketing Workshop to be Held on March 25, 2009

Cooperative Marketing ProgramBroward Cultural Division will host the final workshop of the 2009 Cooperative Marketing Program, on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 -- How Your Web Presence Can Increase the Bottom Line will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Based on the premise that marketing activity should always include a mix of traditional and non-traditional tools, this workshop is specifically geared to those entrepreneurs who DON'T have a website AND to those who DO, and wish to make it more effective. Without spending much money, a website can be cost effective, convey the agency's mission and increase the bottom line.

In this workshop, you will learn: How to drive traffic to your website; How to measure website traffic; How to reap financial rewards by offering advertising on the website; Why reciprocal links are invaluable; How to create social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In) that link to your website; and more.

The presenter is Maria Harrison, President of SFIMA and Adjunct Professor at the University of South Florida. The cost for each workshop is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
