"Island Garden” is an environmental artwork within the Long Key Natural Area in Broward County, Florida. It is inspired by its context within a historical site that was once a series of islands rising up from the everglades. Now, hints of history are written on the landscape and physical remnants present the visitor with fragmentary clues to the natural processes and human developments that have washed over the site over time.
This gathering place has spiraling forms that rise up from water and the surrounding landscape. It includes a pavilion, water elements, plantings, and rustic terrazzo benches and paving. As people spiral through the artwork, a sequence of intermittent vertical screens provides a sense of enclosure. Openings between screens frame views of the surrounding landscape—groves of live oaks, an island teaming with wildlife, and water bodies reminiscent of the original everglades.
