Like a checkered race car flag, the black and white marble of the cantilevered structure is eye-catching at one of the busiest intersections in downtown Fort Lauderdale. As a landmark for the bus terminal serving central transportation, the blue ceramic tile stairway and elliptical yellow roof top are responding to the busy urban activities surrounding it. This integrated structure was designed by the renowned Arquitectonica International Corporation based in Miami. Lead Designer at Arquitectonica is Laurinda Spear.
"A stairway which was part of the required architecture for the Bus Terminal was re-designed to serve as a monumental gateway and transportation node at downtown Fort Lauderdale. The stairway cantilevers from a parallelogram in black and white marble, like a checkered flag frozen in motion. The blue ceramic tile stair with red openings slides around the parallelogram under a yellow elliptical roof, all responding to the motion of the traffic surrounding it."
