 Broward Calls to Artists

Pine Island Pocket Park Call to Artists

Deadline: 2/15/16

The Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program in conjunction with the Highway Construction & Engineering Division is seeking to commission one artist or artist team to design, build and install functionally integrated site-specific public artwork for a pocket park located adjacent to a major vehicular corridor in Davie, Florida.

The location for the artwork is a 1.3 acre pocket park, currently under construction as part of a County road improvement project. The pocket park is sited along a major north/south vehicular corridor in central Broward County utilized by an estimated 29,000 vehicles daily. Functionally integrated public art shall enhance the landscape design for the space which includes a meandering walking path, shrubbery and trees. The artwork shall be visible to individuals traveling northbound, without creating an obstruction or distraction. The artwork must be low maintenance and generate an awareness of the attributes or history of the Town of Davie and Broward County and the native people who once resided in the area, through a contemporary artistic approach. Specific locations for artwork opportunities will be determined as a result of interaction with project team and the community. It is intended that the artwork be spatially integrated to the site as well as functionally integrated.

The pocket park is situated on the east side of South Pine Island Road, between Southwest 18th and Southwest 21st Streets in the Town of Davie, Florida. Significant archeological finds have been made in the immediate area.

Budget: $65,000, all inclusive

The Duane Hanson Allied Artist Award Program was established in 1994 to honor internationally recognized artist Duane Hanson, who resided in this community and who was instrumental in encouraging the careers of Broward artists. Mr. Hanson served for many years as a member of the Public Art and Design Committee.

The purpose of the Award Program is to provide local artists the opportunity to assist experienced artists commissioned for major projects of $50,000 or more by the Public Art and Design Program, in order to gain the technical and administrative expertise needed to compete within the field of public art. Allied Artists are matched up with commissioned artists based on their level of experience, artistic medium and general interests. Pre-qualified artists who are chosen for a specific project will be compensated for their service as an Allied Artist.

The responsibilities of Allied Artists include, but are not limited to, coordinating and attending community and agency meetings; conducting research regarding materials, design issues, and building codes; assisting in the coordination and installation of artworks; writing reports, and any other duties requested by the commissioned artist that relate to the design, fabrication and installation of the artwork.
