TSA Pre✓™ Arrives at FLL
TSA Pre✓™ allows select flyers of Delta Air Lines and members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Trusted Traveler Program to receive expedited screening benefits for domestic travel. Eligible participants use dedicated screening lanes for benefits that could include leaving on shoes, light outerwear and belts, as well as leaving computers, and 3-1-1 compliant liquids in carry-on bags. The dedicated TSA Pre✓™ lane is only available in Terminal 2 by using the east entrance checkpoint, which is next to the Lee Wagener Art Gallery. FLL is the fourth airport in Florida and 34th in the U.S. to offer this program. For specifics on TSA Pre✓™, visit TSA’s website.
Terminal 3, Concourse F Food Kitchen Network is a new concept and is the first in any airport within the United States. It offers sandwiches such as a Florida Shrimp Po’Boy, salads, baked goods, and snacks made with organic and local ingredients. They serve a variety of beverages, wine, craft beer, and cocktails. Hours: 5 a.m. - 9 p.m. (Hours may vary depending on flight schedules.)
Key West Bar & Deli serves an assortment of coffee, espresso, and cold beverages. The restaurant also features local sandwich favorites such as Mojito Chicken, Media Noche, and Greek Wraps. The bar will offer various types of alcoholic beverages and beers to match the South Florida taste. Hours: 9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Villa Fresh Pizzeria offers classic fresh authentic Italian cuisine including spaghetti & meatballs, baked ziti, lasagna, strombolis, and various styles of pizza. Hours: 6 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
The Food Wall offers gourmet salads and sandwiches with a South Florida flair. There are also packaged snacks and sauces for passengers in a hurry. Hours: 9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Hours may vary depending on flight schedules.)
Construction crews have completed some of the tunnel’s foundations and walls. The lanes of Federal Highway shifted eastward in October 2012 to allow crews to finish the tunnels.
Eventually, there will be 12 tunnels over Federal Highway and the Florida East Coast Railroad. The new 10th Street opened east to Seventh Avenue. The old South Runway was removed and the tarmac recycled as part of the new runway.
Crews are finishing the tunnel foundations by driving piles, pouring concrete caps over the piles, and then building walls on the caps. Both the caps and walls are re-enforced with miles of rebar skeletons. Early this year, crews will start working on the top of the tunnels. They will place beams across the top of the walls, with metal forms between the beams. Crews will build a rebar frame on top of the beams and forms, and then pour concrete on the rebar frame. The top of the structures will be the actual runway and taxiway supporting the planes.
The retaining wall, will hold the seven million cubic yards of fill, rises east of Federal Highway. The mound of fill within the retaining wall rises about one foot every two weeks. The eastern most part of the runway will eventually rise to 65 feet.
The Broward County Aviation Department is working closely with construction crews to minimize airborne dirt on and around the construction projects. Street sweepers and water trucks are regularly used to reduce the dust during the dry winter months.
