Final Report
Broward County Aviation Department's Green Airport Initiative (GAI) held three public meetings to discuss its final reports and recommendations.
The findings from the GAI study will help Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) improve environmental quality and efficiency. It will help FLL become a community model for sustainable development. Clean Airport Partnership, Inc., a private consulting firm, conducted the study on behalf of Broward County.
The Executive Summary and seven final environmental reports from the Green Airport Initiative (GAI) are listed below.
- Executive Summary (PDF 225 KB)
- Environmental Footprint for FLL Operations
Five environmental impact areas were evaluated: Water Quality, Solid Waste, Air Quality, Energy Consumption, and Noise. View Report (PDF 3 MB)
- Investigating Air Emission Impacts on the Community, This study looked at the particulate matter to determine if it was associated with aircraft operations on and off the airport. The collected matter was analyzed chemically and using a scanning electron microscope. View Report (PDF 2.5 MB)
- Assessing the Feasibility of Utilizing Recycled Vegetable Oil as a Vehicle Fuel
This report details using processed cooking oil from Airport concessions to fuel diesel vehicles at FLL. The report identifies the availability of used oil, potential vehicles, and vehicle conversion costs. View Report (PDF 320 KB)
- Water Reduction Opportunities and Recommendations
Two initiatives were evaluated, including upgrading bathroom facilities and irrigation systems to reduce water/non-potable water consumption. View Report (PDF 1.7 MB)
- Energy Supply, Distribution, and Conservation The analysis included a variety of renewable and conservation opportunities. It makes several recommendations, including a cost-benefit analysis. View Report (PDF 4.7 MB)
- Solid and Hazardous Waste Reduction Opportunities and Recommendations This study looked at expanding the existing recycling program and implementing a food donation program. View Report (PDF .5 MB)
- Reduce Harmful Air Emissions It evaluated strategies to reduce air emissions from aircraft operations, ground service equipment and landside vehicles. View Report (PDF 1.4 MB)

Background Information
The Clean Airport Partnership (CAP), a private consulting firm, is conducting a Green Airport Initiative (GAI) at the Airport.
The GAI is a five-phase process designed to help FLL improve environmental quality and efficiency and become a community model for sustainable development. The first phase is to measure the environmental conditions at the Airport in five areas:
- Air quality
- Water quality
- Solid waste
- Noise
- Energy consumption
CAP introduced the project at a public meeting on March 31, 2005. They also provided a progress report on October 18, 2005, to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.
CAP is developing an Environmental Report based on the initial findings. It will be completed in early 2006, and workshops will present the Report to the public.
