ArtsJournal's founder and editor Doug McLennan , formerly an arts columnist and arts reporter with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattle Weekly, will present A Strategy for Culture in the Age of Infinite Choice , on May 6, 2010. The workshop will be held at ArtServe at 1350 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, 8:30 a.m. until Noon.

McLennan is currently acting director of the National Arts Journalism Program. His presentation, A Strategy for Culture in the Age of Infinite Choice , will address the cultural landscape of the United States looking at its diversity and the growing choices and accessibilities that are reshaping and transforming the culture of the nation. He will address the way cultural organizations must frame their marketing strategies to incorporate these newly emerging dynamics.
McLennan feels that the United States is 'shedding a cultural business model based on a need to get the word out with limited distribution pipes, and into a world where infinite choices seem to overwhelm the consumer. In such a market place, concerts compete with video games which compete with Facebook and other instant, on-demand distractions," says McLennan. "The attention of audiences is an ever changing target that requires a new way of thinking and focus, in order to capture."

|Emerging Artists Foster Fellowship Winner, Greg Galavotti|
The Cultural Foundation of Broward, Inc. announces the winner of the 2010 Foster Fellowship for emerging Broward-based artist and singer-songwriter Greg Galavotti. The cash award will assist Galavotti with the recording of his original music by live musicians in a professional studio, and mixing and finalizing it into a compact disc. His ultimate goal is to become a full-time singer/songwriter and recording artist—a life-long ambition.
A native of Syracuse, NY, Greg Galavotti is a talented, multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass and drums. He moved to South Florida at the age of ten with his younger sister, Lisa, after a tragic home fire claimed the lives of his parents and two younger siblings. These unfortunate circumstances led to Galavotti leaving home at a young age to strike out on his own; however, his deep love of music has continually provided a powerful, positive force that has kept him going through it all. He acknowledges the times he has been on stage performing as the best moments of his life.
One of his earliest moments on stage occurred at O’Hara’s Pub on Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale in the early 1990s. Sitting in with the great Dr. Lonnie Smith, Galavotti's performance drew a huge response from the audience, which gave him the impetus to integrate himself into the local music scene. Through connections he made there, Galavotti was granted an audition at Miami-Dade College, and was quickly accepted to their music program. After two years he transferred to the University of Miami’s highly selective and esteemed jazz vocal program.
In the mid 2000s, Galavotti was introduced to famed Boxtops guitarist Gary Talley and invited to try his luck in Nashville where he lived for two and a half years and learned the true art of crafting a song. He followed this with a move to L.A. where he learned about the business side of his artistry. Returning to South Florida in 2007, he became a resident of Artspace Sailboat Bend Lofts—an artist live-work community and is currently working on a five song EP that reflect the numerous experiences of his travels. With bassist/producer Yves Giraud (Spoon Benders, Jadestone) and pianist/arranger Martin Bejerano (Roy Haynes, Russell Malone), he hopes to release mid-summer 2010. More information...
|Successful! Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute Returns to South Florida|
Broward Cultural Division, The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC), and ArtServe, Inc. announce The Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute (AEI ) for South Florida artists, to be presented on four Saturdays in June 2010 at ArtServe, Inc., 1350 East Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
The AEI is an artist-focused course of study designed to assist individual artists of all disciplines (visual, musicians, writers, media, theater, performing arts) by cultivating and advancing their business skills, and is designed at strengthening their operating infrastructure and expanding their businesses. To date, 190 South Florida artists have graduated from the Institute. AEI will be offered as 18 classes convening during full-day sessions (9:00 am – 6:00 pm) on June 5, 12 & 19, and a Business Plan Clinic and Workshop on June 26, 2010 (9:00 am – 2:00 pm).
The Business Plan Clinic guides participants through preparation of a simple business plan, an essential tool for any artist. In addition, participants will learn how to work effectively with lenders to obtain financial support through the Artist Micro Credit Program, a community-based revolving loan program, designed to assist resident Broward County practicing professional and emerging artists. Designed to help artists operate in the marketplace more successfully, the AEI course curriculum covers all aspects of developing an artistic business.
Participation costs $100 and includes light refreshments and free parking.

|Two More Arts Jobs Saved! Florida Youth Orchestra S.T.E.P.S. Out|
Broward Cultural Division distributed economic recovery funds to 16 arts organizations including Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO). The funds for FYO supported the maintenance of two positions- Dawn Janosik and Carole Seplin , both 20-year long arts administrators with FYO, who may now continue working together on arts program such as S.T.E.P.S. (Symphonic Training Education and Performance for Students). These positions were previously slated for elimination due to financial cut backs.
Since 1988, Florida Youth Orchestra has been providing the highest quality classical music education for young talented musicians ages 6-19. Over 300 members strong, the Orchestra continues to be recognized as Florida's premier youth orchestra.
For Janosik and Seplin, and children from Kids in Distress and other outreach venues, this funding means the preservation of musical education, thanks to a stimulus grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Through the S.T.E.P.S. program, Florida Youth Orchestra provides each child with a free musical instrument, music books and materials, weekly lessons with professional musicians, special events and image-building activities. The goals of the project are to introduce the art of music through instruction to children who would not otherwise have opportunity for music training; to increase academic success, a proven result of music study; enhance self-esteem as a result of accomplishment and achievement; improve social skills through small group instruction, facilitating cooperation and teamwork; foster positive behavioral skills, including concentration, motivation, and patience; present positive role models in a productive environment; and to develop appreciation of classical music.

|Final Component in Millenium Springs Artwork Installed at ArtsPark Young Circle|
Broward County Commission’s Cultural Division and the City of Hollywood announce the installation of the E-Sculpture as the final component in the Millennium Springs artwork, located at the ArtsPark at Young Circle , a 10-acre park in the heart of downtown Hollywood.
The E-sculpture portion now completes the multi-layered artwork that consists of (1) the water sculpture with the fountain, sound art and ceremonial rope; (2) the dream-wave pattern sculpture which is part of the walkway design; and (3) the E-sculpture that will be accessible to people all over the world via the internet (images available upon request).
The E-sculpture is an informative website of verbiage, visuals and webcams detailing the journey of the artwork from its conception in 2002, through its significant design and hand-crafting by craftsmen and artists in Japan and the U.S.
Utilizing two webcams to capture and transmit real-time images of the Baobab tree and the fountain, the artist- designed website connects people all over the world to the ArtsPark. Internationally-known artist Ritsuko Taho’s artwork Millennium Springs contributed to the transformation of the Young Circle park into a regional, interactive ArtsPark, where Broward County residents and visitors can partake in arts and cultural activities in the day and night. The focus of the ArtsPark at Young Circle is the spectacular feature fountain designed by Taho in collaboration with project designer Margi Glavovic Nothard and architect Marvin Scharf.

|2010 Update of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: Public Art Master Plan|
The Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program is proud to announce the completion of the 2010 Update of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Public Art Master Plan , by artist Noel Harding.
This Master Plan is designed to direct the development of the Public Art & Design Program at the airport and identify future opportunities to guide the public art portfolio for one of South Florida’s prominent gateways to the world.
This recent work is an update to a Public Art Master Plan created in 2005 by artist Noel Harding and a multidisciplinary team, with expertise in the field of public art and design in transportation (including roadways, transit, and airports), landscape, commercial architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering. The Plan evaluated the potential for creating integrated and site-specific artworks, and identified specific locations and types of artwork to be considered for future construction projects. The project addressed the implementation of public art and design using traditional two and three dimensional visual media, as well as innovative multimedia art that applies light, sound, and computer generated imagery among others. Public artworks installed through this Master Plan include the Lee Wagener Community Art Gallery and the Media Arts Project.
Since the completion of this plan, the Airport has modified its expansion plans significantly. Terminals 2, 3, and 4 will be renovated, and Terminal 4 will be expanded to accommodate the new south runway. As a consequence, Noel Harding was commissioned to update the Public Art Master Plan to reflect these changes, identify new public art opportunities, and incorporate the Airport’s focus on green building.
