Two More Arts Jobs Saved!

Robert E. Davis assists with Cinema Paradiso’s programming of daily film screenings, special film series events, and educational programs while successfully serving a diverse and art-conscious community. Cinema Paradiso is one of South Florida's most unique theaters. Operated by the Broward County Film Society and home of the annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, it is known for its role as Broward County's only full-time Art House theater, showcasing the finest in independent and foreign films, along with documentaries and classic films not shown anywhere else on the big screen.

Arts education coordinator Kate McCarthy’s role is critical to education programming in the performing arts, including musical theater and dance for The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood who present contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances, and high-quality education programs for adults and children. The Center fosters a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity. Annually, the Art and Culture Center provides programming which impacts more than 50,000 South Florida residents and visitors.

To date, 47 arts jobs in Broward County were retained through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a national American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) enacted through the Obama Administration.

Studio 18 in the Pines Offers Affordable Individual Studios & Exhibition Space

Studio 18 logoA former hospital laundry facility has reopened as a million dollar studio space for fine artists in Pembroke Pines. After more than eight years of planning, the City of Pembroke Pines will celebrate the grand opening of Studio 18 in the Pines on August 13th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. The 1950s newly renovated 11,000 square-foot building is located in the Howard C. Forman Human Services Campus on the northwest corner of University Drive and Pembroke Road. The building was the former laundry facility for the old South Florida State Hospital, and now re-opens as studio space for visual artists.

Each applicant must submit a portfolio of work to be juried by a panel of artists, before they are able to rent studios. The eighteen studios (including three outdoor spaces, ideal for large scale sculptors) range in size from 102 to 242 square feet. All but one of the studios have sinks, and many have natural light, thereby facilitating ideal working conditions for many of the artists once forced to work in dusty garages or overcrowded bedrooms.

Studio 18 has two large classrooms, to be used for workshops and classes open to the community.

While the main gallery at Studio 18 will feature the work of the talented artists that rent space at the studio, exhibitions will also be curated, showcasing the work of local, as well as international artists. Studio 18 in the Pines will thereby become a destination gallery with shows that rival the excellence of any gallery at the forefront of contemporary art.

Art & Culture Center of Hollywood Chosen to Provide Artwork

Art and Cultural Center logoThe Art and Culture Center of Hollywood was recently chosen by the Broward Public Library Foundation to provide artwork for the annual Books n’ Bears at the Holidays program, which is a Broward County Library outreach program for low-income children.

Some 900 tots, ages 3 to 5, enrolled in childcare centers in disadvantaged neighborhoods, are invited each year to holiday parties held in early December at libraries throughout Broward County. During these parties, the children each receive a book and a plush teddy bear of their own to commemorate their fun-filled visit.

The Miami Dolphins Foundation is the Presenting Sponsor of Books n’ Bears at the Holidays, sending Dolphins players, cheerleaders and mascots to the holiday parties.

This year, the Foundation will work with the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood to collect drawings from children, ages 6 to 12. After review, one piece is chosen as the image for the event’s marketing materials. More than 60 children from the Center’s “Young Artists” summer camp and aftercare program will participate in the contest.

Ft. Lauderdale Names Susan Gillis as Historian for Centennial Celebration

Susan GillisThe City of Fort Lauderdale, in anticipation of commemorating its 100th birthday in 2011, has retained Susan Gillis as the historical research consultant for the celebration.

Gillis has more than 30 years experience as an expert on local lore, working as a curator, archivist and consultant at various local cultural facilities, including the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, Stranahan House and Bonnet House. She has authored four books and co-authored another on Fort Lauderdale’s history.

Gillis will work with the City’s Centennial Celebration Committee to preserve, recreate and promote Fort Lauderdale’s history through research, as well as spearheading several educational initiatives throughout 2011. Among the many events planned to pay tribute to the past century will be a series of traveling “centennial exhibits,” walking tours, state heritage markers and speaker presentations.

The Centennial Celebration Committee has been gathering input from residents, businesses and local organizations to create a citywide celebration that pays tribute to Fort Lauderdale’s past, present and future.

The Committee is comprised of 21 Fort Lauderdale residents with ties to the local business, historical, educational and cultural communities. Committee members will draw on their diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise to plan an inclusive commemoration that appeals to residents, businesses and visitors.

Executive Director Ben Cameron Discusses the Future of the Arts
Ben CameronBEN CAMERON has served since 1998 as the Executive Director of Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for not-for-profit theaters currently claiming 17,000 individual and 440 professional theater company members. Prior to this appointment, he had been active in corporate philanthropy, first as senior program officer at the Dayton Hudson Foundation and subsequently as manager of community relations at Target Stores in Minneapolis, MN.

In this position, he supervised a $51 million national giving program which focused on grant giving, cause marketing and volunteerism at the community level. From 1988 through 1992, he worked for the National Endowment for the Arts, serving as director of the theater program from 1990. He has taught theater at the Yale School of Drama, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, and is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at Columbia University. He received an MFA in dramaturgy from the Yale School of Drama in 1981 and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently serves as the Secretary of the American Arts Alliance, the Vice-President of the national Arts and Business Council, and on the Board of Grantmakers in the Arts.

New Artwork Installed at Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport

Lay of the Land artworkBroward Cultural Division's Public Art & Design program announces the completion of the artwork The Lay of the Land (shown at left) at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Created by international artist Pam Beyette, the series of mosaic installations that consist of six (6) motifs entitled Serpent Star, Lily, Anemone, Coral, Coontail, and Sea Flower, use various colors to identify the 22 entrances in Terminals 2, 3 & 4, on both upper and lower levels of the airport.

Beyette created a series of inlays illustrating South Florida's expansive and distinctive ecosystems from a bird's eye view. The installations reflect the constantly changing pattern and structure of the sawgrass prairies, wetlands, and coastal estuaries. The artist aims at enlivening the experience of the airport's visitors as they walk across the entrance area covered with these 'welcome mats' of colorful inlays.

Pam Beyette is a public artist and art planner. She received a BFA in Painting and a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Washington. With more than 30 years of combined artmaking and planning experience, Beyette’s projects emphasize collaboration and partnership with architects, engineers, scientists, writers, communities and public agencies. Many of her site-specific artworks have been incorporated into schools, parks, libraries, universities, transit stations, and justice centers. Major and recent projects include the Seattle Justice Center in Seattle, Washington; Nature’s Filters for the Environmental Services Laboratory in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Arborvitae, for Little Cedar Elementary and Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, Washington. Her inspiration is sourced from environmental, historical and cultural experiences, creating art that tells a story of place, tracing humankind’s imprint and illustrating nature’s silhouette.
