Sample-McDougald House Preserves an Important Piece of Pompano Beach History
By Dave Baber

Early Pompano Beach-area settlers Albert and Maggie Sample (Albert was commonly known by his middle name, Neal) and their five children came to Broward County from South Carolina in 1911. They followed Neal’s younger brother, John M. Sample, who had arrived a few years earlier. By the time that Neal and Maggie had arrived, John Sample had secured a substantial amount of farmland, much of it purchased from the Florida East Coast Railway, and was developing a successful agricultural organization. A Stitch in Time:
The World Woven by Jonathan Rockford
By Rachel Galvin

A master of illusion, Jonathan Rockford plays with light and shape when molding his universe, a mix of tradition and modernity. Melding crocheted creations with motion pictures, he intersperses the fine art of craft-making with the newer medium of filmmaking, creating a three-dimensional experience that has a tendency to trick the eye of the viewer with its textures.

For him, crochet is about tension … and time. A single stitch is like a pixel in an image; together, they create a bigger picture and, thus, he creates a new artistic universe.

“Each stitch represents a moment in time and the relationship between one stitch and the next really determines the structural qualities of the entire piece. I feel that these elements inform the works that I have made, as well as bridge the gap between the other processes I explore (i.e. video art and working with found objects),” said Rockford.

Ashanti:
Weaving Artistic Expression
and Cultural Diversity for 20 Years
By Rachel Galvin

A strong, vivid garment is much richer by each added colorful thread; a painting more vibrant with each stroke of a new hue. And so our society is enriched by embracing the diversity of all cultures.

The importance of inclusion is central to Ashanti Cultural Arts, a cultural arts organization that goes into communities providing a much needed service. Founded by Linda Houston Jones in 1990, this organization began primarily as a way to offer instruction and access to artistic programs that highlighted the African-American experience. But through being inclusive of all cultures, everyone is welcome.
