Mayor Lois Wexler
Collaboration is key to Broward County’s arts and cultural community. We know the rewards of building partnerships.

Teachers and schools have always worked hard to ensure that children receive a well-rounded education.  As you will discover by reading a number of the articles in this issue of Cultural Quarterly, the arts are playing an ever-more-important role in achieving that goal – and the lessons are being taught far beyond traditional classroom settings and subjects.

The benefits of arts education – and its more recent outgrowth, arts integration – are clear.  Students who are involved in the arts do better in school.  And teachers who weave music, dance, drama and the like into English, science, math and other academic disciplines often find that their pupils walk away with a better understanding of the subject matter.

Add a wealth of youth-oriented cultural organizations that teach everything from cartooning to classical ballet into this mix, and it is obvious that Broward County’s children are the beneficiaries of practically unlimited opportunities to experience the arts.  Their lives are richer for it – and their futures will be all the brighter.

My colleagues on the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and I offer a hearty round of applause to all of the teachers, artists and other cultural educators who do so much to introduce the arts into the lives of our children!
