Every summer Kris Coffett looks forward to seeing her campers become more and more polished as thespians. As the artistic director for Curtain Call Playhouse, she watches them “blossom” and hone their acting talents year after year.

“Summer time is the perfect chance for children to spend their free time participating in a very creative, useful and fun activity,” Coffett explains. “Arts camps give the children an opportunity to take part in workshops that they may not have during the school year.”

Curtain Call Playhouse is entering the 11th season of its drama camp. It is one of many area theaters and arts organization tailoring their summer programs to arts education. Curtain Call Playhouse runs its nearly month-long camp in June, concluding with a full-scale production featuring all of the campers.

“We will present Rapunzel this summer,” she adds. “The children will help write the script, add their own improvisations and create a version that is very funny and very unexpected. Everyone is

incorporated into the show, regardless of his or her level of experience. They really grow as performers by the end of camp.”

Youngsters who attend the Performing Arts Summer Camp at the University Center for the Performing Arts in Davie will find their mornings full of learning to act, dance, sing, study scenes and analyze characters. They also learn about stage movement and makeup. After lunch, they rehearse for their full-scale musical productions, which take place after each four-week session.

“This is our 23rd year of camp,” says Vindhya Khare, director and president of the University Center for the Performing Arts, “The camp is very fun, very high energy and we provide a high quality education. The children are taught by our professional faculty who also teach classes throughout the year.”

For those interested in the fine arts, there are many camp and summer class options as well. At Young At Art Children’s Museum in Davie, children spend the summer painting, sculpting and drawing. They also learn about art history in a unique way, according to Adrienne Chadwick, the museum’s director of education.

“Each week deals with different themes,” she says. “For the past eight years we have based our

Creative Arts Camp

themes on summer hit movies to entice the kids. This summer we will incorporate such new movies as Speed Racer and Kung Fu Panda.” The styles of art masters as well as local artists will be explored through projects using clay, paint, mixed media and other materials.

Camps in the arts introduce children to new skills, allow them to discover a new talent or enjoy a hobby. Some programs are “samplers” while others have a specific focus. For those who like cartooning, for example, Young At Art also offers “Cartooning with Rob Cabrera,” an intensive summer workshop for children up to age 13, taught by a syndicated cartoonist.

In Pembroke Pines, hundreds of children have gotten in the “act” by selecting from fine or performing arts camps each summer. During the school year they also can learn an instrument, take acting lessons or explore the fine arts.

“Our programs have developed such a great reputation over the years that we fill up in a matter of days,” says Robyn Vegas, cultural arts coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “Even though the schools are cutting budgets, we are growing our arts programs to fill the need.”

So, whether your youngsters have their sights set on Broadway, the Louvre or a destination yet unknown, there’s probably a summer arts camp that will help their creativity soar.  To find out what’s available from the organizations mentioned above and many others, go to our Calendar of Events.
