History of the ArtsPark

The 2000 Safe Parks and Land Preservation Bond included a $5 million budget to construct a ArtsPark/cultural center in a County park.  An ArtsPark is a Cultural Center for the performing, visual and literary arts including classroom and workshop space, exhibit and performance space and cultural programming by professional artists with free or low cost services to the community.

To leverage additional dollars for regional cultural facilities, the Broward Cultural Council requested the County to issue a Request for Letters of Interest (RLI) to municipalities to match that amount.

In a competitive process, the City of Hollywood was awarded the ArtsPark funding to transform Young Circle Park.   The Broward County Board of County Commissioners was so impressed with the other applicants and need for arts facilities that additional funding from the Park and Land Bond Issue has enabled the cities of Lauderhill, Pembroke Pines and Miramar to also have ArtsParks.   Each of the cities has contributed matching funds; $15 million in county funding has leveraged $45 million from the municipalities for a total investment of $60 million for the four cultural centers.
