Sami Khan was born and raised in Sarnia, Canada to an Indian Muslim father and a Welsh Methodist mother. He studied cinema and photography at Ithaca College in upstate New York and politics at Birzeit University near Ramallah in the West Bank. After graduating, he worked as a journalist in Toronto, contributing to such publications as This Magazine, Now, and The Nation. He recently completed his MFA in film at Columbia University.
In the summer of 2009, I documented the design, manufacture, and installation of Michele Oka Doner's ambitious public art project, at Port Everglades, entitled "Forces of Nature". As a filmmaker, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to follow Michele's artistic process and learn from her. Beginning with my first visit in the early summer, I immediately gained enormous respect not only for Michele as an artist, but also for the ambitious and complex ideas underpinning her work. It is my hope that with this short documentary, the general public will gain that same respect and appreciation for the tremendous undertaking that is Forces of Nature.
