Media Release

Ceremony takes place on Wednesday, September 19, in Pompano Beach

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Northeast Transit Center in Pompano Beach will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at the southwest corner of Dixie Highway and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard (west of the Florida East Coast Railway and one traffic light north of Atlantic Boulevard). The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Northeast Transit Center, Broward County Transit's first bus transfer center in the northeast portion of the county, will encompass almost 3.5 acres. It will include several passenger amenities, including canopied bus platforms; a “kiss and ride” passenger drop-off area; bench seating; customer service information window, and 'real time' schedule displays. Site landscaping will include a “Pergola” located at the northeast corner, and interactive public artwork, titled Pompano Drum Circle, a grouping of sculptural percussion instruments created by artists Bill and Mary Buchen.

“This facility will not only increase transportation mobility and relieve traffic congestion, but also represent a catalyst for transit-oriented development in northeast Broward County,” states Christopher Walton, Director of the Broward County Office of Transportation.

Broward County Transit routes 20, 42, 50, 60 and Pompano Beach Community Bus Service (blue route) will stop at the transit center. Bus passengers are currently accommodated at the existing bus stops on Dixie Highway, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard. Approximately 2,300 passenger boardings and alightings and close to 300 buses pass through the transit center area each weekday.

The Northeast Transit Center is part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard Mixed-Use Redevelopment Project and a partnership of Broward County, Florida Department of Transportation, District IV and the City of Pompano Beach. The Northeast Transit Center is expected to be completed in Spring 2008.
