Starts on October 1, 2007
First bus fare increase in more than 10 years; first cost-saving pass for college students

Starting on Monday, October 1, 2007, Broward County Transit (BCT) will increase the costs of its bus fares and passes and introduce a new, reduced fare 31-day pass for college students. This bus fare increase – the first in more than 10 years – will assist with future improvements in public transportation services, including new fuel-efficient buses, 'real-time' transit technology to advise when buses will be arriving, and online bus pass sales.

The regular, one-way bus fare will increase from $1.00 to $1.25; the reduced, one-way fare for seniors age 65 years and over, youth age 18 years and under, and the disabled/Medicare passengers will increase from $.50 to $.60. Children 40" and under will still ride free. In addition, the price of all BCT bus passes will increase (for a list of the passes and their increases, visit, and a transfer fee of $.50 will be added to the fare structure when passengers transfer to BCT from Miami-Dade, Palm Tran and Tri-Rail transit systems.

The new College Student Bus Pass will provide unlimited rides for 31 consecutive days starting on the first day it is used. The cost is $20 – half the cost of the regular pass – and a 50 percent savings. Students currently enrolled in a college, university, vocational or technical school are eligible to purchase the pass and must present a current student identification card when purchasing. The College Student Bus Pass will be sold at Broward County libraries and the Central Bus Terminal in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Broward County Transit first introduced the college student pass in December 2004 as a one-year pilot program for students enrolled in participating colleges, universities and sold at the five joint-use Broward County library/college facilities. The pilot program received an overwhelming response from students and college administrators, and was extended another year, which encouraged the introduction of a permanent College Student Bus Pass.
