Broward County ’s Beach Renourishment Project (Segment III)

This week not only saw the completion of the submerged pipeline and dredge mooring facility offshore in Hollywood, but the first dredge load of sand was placed onto the beach. Nearly 4,300 cubic yards of sand, equivalent to about 360 dump truck loads, were pumped on to create new beach.

Because this area of the beach in south Hollywood is extremely narrow, the first few loads will be used to elevate the pipe landing so that subsequent loads will not bury the pipe (see the last photo below).  The first dredging efforts will proceed slowly in order to calibrate the dredge’s suction and pumping operations for the particular characteristics of the material.
