Study Finds Decrease in Loan Defaults of Homes Near Sustainable Features

commutingFannie Mae published “The Effect of Transportation, Location, and Affordability Related Sustainability Features on Mortgage Default Prediction and Risk in Multifamily Rental Housing,” a study conducted by Gary Pivo of the University of Arizona.  Pivo scrutinized over 37,000 Fannie Mae loans analyzing the following seven sustainability variables:  commute time, access to public transportation, walkability, home affordability, retail presence, freeway proximity and nearby protected areas (such as parks).  The report finds that inclusion of the sustainability features dramatically lowered the risk of loan defaults across the board.  More…
