The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) examined the national low-income renter data spanning the past 20 years. HUD's findings show that as the demand for affordable, subsidized and unsubsidized, rental housing has risen, the available affordable housing supply has severely shrank. Preserving and rehabilitating the existing affordable housing units has been found to be the most cost effective solution.
