Moth Magic

Butterflies may get most of the attention in the scientific order Lepidoptera, but moths can be just as fascinating, as you’ll readily learn when Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center in Davie celebrates the fourth annual National Moth Week by hosting Moth Day. It runs from 10AM to 10PM on Saturday, July 25th, and the emphasis will be on the importance of moths to the planet’s ecosystems. Activities will include presentations on moth life cycles, moth diversity, and moth gardening; plant giveaways; and pointers on how to view the moths you can find in your own back yard 

 

A Night of Mystery, Romance & Intrigue

Don't miss the 4th Annual Evening with the Stars as you mix and mingle with some of the country's most influential and entertaining authors. Dress to impress on Friday, July 17th, from 6:30 - 9:30PM at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Hurricane Preparedness Open House at AARLCC

Fourth of July Fireworks at Vista View Park

Looking for a prime spot for enjoying the Fourth of July fireworks? Look no farther than Vista View Park, 4001 SW 142nd Ave., Davie on Saturday, July 4th from 8AM-10PM. Fireworks viewing will be offered all evening and dependent upon weather, displays may be visible from Davie, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Sunrise and possibly Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. Fees are $1.50 per person before 7:30PM, $2 per person after 7:30PM. For more information call the park at 954-357-8898.
 

Take a Coastal Exploration Hike

Explore the unique coastal habitat of Deerfield Island Park under the guidance of a Parks naturalist when the park offers a Coastal Exploration Hike, for ages 8 and up, from 9 to 11AM on designated Saturdays. The tour includes boat shuttle transportation to and from the island park. Deerfield Island Park is located at 1720 Deerfield Island Park in Deerfield Beach. Call 954-357-5100 for details. Future dates include:

Does Your Dog Rule the Roost?

If the answer to this simple question is yes, now is the time to enroll your four-legged problem child in a Dog Smarts 101 class. The class, hosted by Broward County Animal Care and Adoption and taught by a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, provides pet parents with important information to make dog ownership easier for both the dog and the family. Dog Smarts 101 is open to all residents and is free of charge. Since the class is not a dog training session, no pets are permitted. The following classes are scheduled for 2015 from 6-7PM:     
  • July 14th - West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation
  • August 11th - Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place, Miramar

Nothing Compares to a Sunset Nature Walk

South Florida is well known for its sunsets. Now you can enjoy the end-of-the-day magic at Miramar Pineland (3600 S. University Drive, Miramar), which will offer twice-monthly Sunset Nature Walks on Wednesdays and Sundays, from 5:30 to 7PM. The fee is $3 per person per walk, plus, on Sundays, the park's regular weekend gate entrance fee of $1.50 per person. Future dates of this program include:
