About Kristin

Commissioner Kristin JacobsCommissioner Kristin Jacobs has earned a well-known and respected reputation as a visionary, consistently bringing vital issues to the forefront long before they become fashionable. In 1998, Commissioner Jacobs was elected countywide to the Broward County Commission and is currently serving her fourth term. She is proud to represent the residents of District 2, and has previously served as Mayor in 2013 and 2005, and Vice Mayor in 2012 and 2004.

Kristin is constantly working with the intention of reaching out to neighboring community leaders, cities, and counties. In 2009, she successfully brought together four Southeast Florida counties. The counties signed a historic compact to speak with one voice to Federal and State government about the unique needs of our region. Building on that model, in 2013 she successfully forged a second compact with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, agreeing to work together to achieve common goals.

In 2008, Kristin was invited by Congress to testify on the Clean Water Act and in 2013, she was invited by the US Senate to testify on Climate Change. This July, Kristin was thrilled when the White House asked her to meet President Obama and to be a part of his historic address on National Climate Change Policy at Georgetown University. She was then asked by the White House to serve on the National Climate Preparedness and Resilience Task Force.

Commissioner Jacobs is an unparalleled advocate for women and children and passed the County’s Human Rights Act to prevent discrimination. She is known as the “mother” of Broward’s Living Wage Ordinance, now in place for 11 years, which guarantees a decent salary for County workers and contracted employees.

Kristin is a longtime advocate of light rail and has successfully fought for the passage of Broward’s first streetcar, The Wave, and recently passed Complete Streets, adding bicycle and pedestrian-friendly urban design to County roads. Kristin has worked to expand affordable housing, revitalize neighborhoods, encourage sustainable development and is passionate advocate for making solar energy a viable option for homeowners.

Whether fighting for a common sense approach to growth management planning, protecting our environment, securing fair wages for workers or creating a public transportation system that move people not cars, Kristin is working for the people of Broward County.

Kristin and her husband Stuart are the proud parents of three children and have three grandchildren.
