When I was chosen to serve as Mayor this year, I promised to develop both short range and long term goals to guide us through the next decade. Last month, Commissioners met to develop a strategic plan that defines where we want to go in the future and clearly define our priorities. The Commission has established goals in the past, but we must re-evaluate what’s realistic given the state of the economy. Setting goals will better define our budget priorities and guide us accordingly.
Job creation and boosting the economy were topics of conversation when I met with Florida’s new Governor, Rick Scott. He was touring Florida to get a better understanding of the major industries that fuel our State’s economy. He visited Port Everglades and met with tourism and hospitality experts. We discussed the importance of providing financing to market Florida both here and abroad and the need to develop new revenue streams, such as creating a market for cultural tourism. Of course tourism and hospitality is a mainstay industry in Broward County, and so are the operations of Port Everglades and the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.
The Broward County Ethics Code now extends to all of our 31 cities. The Ethics Code has changed the way Broward County conducts business and provides thorough transparency. You can visit www.broward.org/commission and click on “disclosure documents” to find information required in the Ethics Code. We are also working to create an Office of Inspector General. I’ll keep you updated.
Please join in recognizing February as “Black History Month.” Broward libraries are hosting a series of events you’ll be able to find at www.broward.org/library. Of course, Happy Valentine’s Day as well!
