When you hear February 2, you think of Groundhog’s Day. When you think of Broward County Libraries, free-standing buildings with books, computers, and other media may come to mind. But, behind those library walls is a tale that needs to be told. We call it BCL WoW or Broward County Library—Without Walls and now with the cool weather outside, it’s the perfect time to cozy up with a good book and never leave the house!
Broward County has the ability to bring a virtual library right into your own home. Broward’s library website receives 700,000 electronic visitors a month. Library card holders can renew books online, download e-books and audio books and have instant access to a variety of journals.
BCL WoW recently introduced a new mobile application allowing you to access your library account, search the catalog, place holds, find your nearest library and more. Other mobile applications include Byki Mobile (Community Edition) which helps you learn languages by locking foreign words and phrases into your memory. Tutor.com To Go™ connects you to a live one-on-one tutor. I personally used the virtual library services to learn a little Portuguese prior to the Broward County economic trade mission to Brazil.
More than 119,000 e-books and audio books were downloaded last year, a 1000-percent increase from the year before. There is also a wide variety of downloadable music, songs that never expire and students can access help with their homework using their computer, smart phone or tablet. The virtual library can also help your career. BCL WoW offers access to free live expert coaches for every stage of a job search. There is online interactive resume writing assistance and interview coaching to help someone get that next job.
Broward County provides a virtual library that grows in popularity as our culture increasingly makes use of computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones for just about everything. For more information go to www.broward.org/library/BCLWoW or search your phone's app store for BCL WoW and enjoy the many services of Broward County Libraries.
February celebrates Black History Month and Presidents’ Day. We are also reminded that February 14th is Valentine’s Day, not only a day to express affection for friends and lovers, but a good time to remember to keep your heart and the hearts of the ones you love in healthy, working order.
