2013 - Valuable Volunteers

One of Broward County’s greatest and most valued non-renewable resources is a person who also volunteers some of their time to better County agencies and services. Last year our County volunteers collectively donated thousands of hours of public service valued at millions of dollars.

Many Broward County agencies offer opportunities for residents to volunteer their services. Whether you are a retiree with extra time to spare, a student looking to fulfill public service hours, or an individual (or group) interested in becoming more involved in our community, the time to volunteer is now.

Here is a partial listing of the County agencies, divisions, and offices that would welcome you as a volunteer to assist with their operations: Animal Care, Cultural, Elderly and Veterans, Emergency Management, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Libraries, Parks and Recreation, as well as Waste and Recycling Services.

Won’t you take a few moments and review the specific agency volunteer needs and desired skill sets by visiting the County website at You will see that everything from being a greeter at the County’s Animal Care shelters to assisting with trash removal clean-ups on our local beaches, are in the realm of volunteer activities. On that same web page, there are also links to non-governmental agencies, such as HANDS-ON-BROWARD, that also recruit volunteer talent.

Broward County is truly blessed to have so many active community service oriented volunteers. However, our agencies’ needs are great, especially more so as we struggle with flat revenues and increased demands for services as a result of the Great Recession.

In the same volunteer vein, I would again ask you to consider donating to Broward County’s 365 Food Drive. At my suggestion in 2010, the drive was made a year-round initiative resulting in some 27,000 pounds (over 13 tons!) of food and supplies being donated to area food banks. All non-perishable canned food items, toiletries, and baby supplies are welcome at any time. Collection boxes are available at the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Government Center West, 1 University Drive, Plantation, the Main Library and all Broward County branch libraries, and regional courthouses. For a complete list of collection box locations and desired food and supplies needed, visit the County web at

Thank you for your consideration in these matters. Let me also take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day, as well as to formally acknowledge and reflect that February is celebrated as Black History Month.
