Broward Aware: Protecting Our Children Event

Ecoaction Day at Snake Warrior's Island

Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your morning? Head on down to Snake Warrior's Island Natural Area in Miramar on Saturday, April 11th, from 9AM to noon and volunteer to clean up trash, plant native plants and/or remove non-native invasive plants. Students can earn community service hours by helping improve and preserve the environment. Volunteers should dress appropriately with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty. For more information call 954-357-8884.   

​Workshops on Diabetes Self-Management & Matter of Balance

Two interactive YMCA-sponsored workshops get under way in April at Franklin Park, 2501 Franklin Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Diabetes Self-Management will teach participants how to use diet, exercise and/or medications to manage their diabetes, or if you're not diabetic, how to lower the change of getting the disease. The workshop meets once a week for six weeks, on Wednesdays, 5:30 - 8PM on the following dates:
  

April 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th and May 6th and 13th  

Matter of Balance meets on Thursdays from 10AM to noon starting on April 9th and ending on May 28th. Participants will learn to improve their balance, flexibility, and strength to reduce their fall risks at home. This workshop meets on the following dates:

April 9th, 16th, 23rd and May 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th

Trinidad & Tobago is the Destination Friday event for April 10th from 6:30 to 9:30PM at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Preen your feathers, paint your face with sparkles and slip on your party mask and dancing shoes! Come dressed to party hearty (feathers optional)! Free Fast-Trac Business Workshop Series

Does Your Dog Rule the Roost?

If the answer to this simple question is yes, now is the time to enroll your four-legged problem child in a Dog Smarts 101 class. The class, hosted by Broward County Animal Care and Adoption and taught by a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, provides pet parents with important information to make dog ownership easier for both the dog and the family. Dog Smarts 101 is open to all residents and is free of charge. Since the class is not a dog training session, no pets are permitted. The following classes are scheduled for 2015 from 6-7PM:
  • April 14th -  Miramar Branch Library, 2050 Civic Center Place, Miramar
  • May 12th - West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation
  • June 9th - West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation

Nothing Compares to a Sunset Nature Walk

South Florida is well known for its sunsets. Now you can enjoy the end-of-the-day magic at Miramar Pineland (3600 S. University Drive, Miramar), which will offer twice-monthly Sunset Nature Walks on Wednesdays and Sundays, from 5:30 to 7PM. The fee is $3 per person per walk, plus, on Sundays, the park's regular weekend gate entrance fee of $1.50 per person. Future dates of this program include:
  • April 8th and 12th
  • May 6th and 10th
  • June 3rd and 7th
