Save Our African American Treasures
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center will co-host a two-day program to help South Florida residents identify and preserve items of historical and cultural significance tucked away in their attics, closets and garages. Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Drop-Off Event this Weekend
This free household hazardous waste and electronics recycling drop-off event is hosted by Broward County’s Unincorporated communities and is open to residents of the following cities that have participation agreements with Broward County: Cooper City, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hollywood, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, Margate, Parkland, Pembroke Park, Sea Ranch Lakes, Unincorporated Broward, West Park, Weston and Wilton Manors. Proof of residency is required, such as a photo ID with current address showing residency in one of the cities named above and one of the following: a utility bill, a vehicle registration or a trim notice/tax bill. Comcast Cares Day
An annual tradition since 2001, Comcast Cares Day has mobilized more than 500,000 volunteers who have given more than 3 million hours of service at over 5,000 projects in the United States and abroad – becoming the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort.

In Broward County, the 13th Annual Comcast Cares Day project, in partnership with HandsOn Broward, will include a “HandsOn and kid friendly Clean and Green at Delevoe Park”. There is a variety of volunteer opportunities and activities, including: a waterway cleanup, park cleanup and beautification, a mural or light painting project, and a kit-assembly project.

Walk Aware
An initiative led by Broward County Public Schools, aimed at reducing the rates of teen pregnancy and births to teen parents in Broward County.  Over 500 middle and high school students walk a course of resource and information stations to become aware of opportunities, causes and programs.  Students also engage in presentations and workshops.  Flyer

Speak Up Broward Public Engagement Grant Briefing
Community-based organizations eligible for this competitive grant include non-profit and non-government organizations that have a membership or service base that include, but are not limited to:

  • communities of interest
  • minority and low-income populations
  • people with limited English proficiency
  • special interest advocacy groups (such as transportation disadvantaged, environmental, elderly, housing and community development),
  • faith-based organizations, etc.

Communities of interest and the community-based organization must reside within Broward County. Individual applicants are not eligible.  The estimated value for individual project awards is expected to range from $2,000 to $5,000. We anticipate awarding 6 to 10 projects within the total budget for this program of $30,000. Period of performance is from January 15, 2014 - October 15, 2014.  Click here for flyer

Broward Neighborhood Parks Take the Charge Out of Bullying 
A day of activities for in the parks’ After-School Program, designed for children ages 6 to 17, to raise awareness about bullying and how to combat it.  Afterwards participants are encouraged to sign an anti-bullying pledge. The activities include a march/parade through the neighborhood adjacent to the park; other activities include games, lunch, an anti-bullying video followed by a Q&A session, and a guest speaker from the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development is offering “Intentional Entrepreneur,” a free workshop, part of the Kauffman FastTrac® Program which provides experienced and aspiring entrepreneurs the tools needed to start and grow successful businesses. The workshops provide business owners the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the best resources available to start and grow a successful business.
  • Outline the critical steps to a successful business launch.
  • Learn how to assess your entrepreneurial interests and align priorities with your vision.
  • Identify action steps to meet your business-related goals.

Boulevard Gardens Community Cleanup
Volunteer to beautify the Boulevard Gardens community by helping to remove trash and litter.  Encourage your neighbors to come out and help too.  Individuals and groups are welcome to participate, and students can receive Community Service Hours for volunteering.  (Bags/gloves supplied) Free refreshments for volunteers.  Bulk waste pickup will be onsite.
