During the 2017 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature created the Affordable Housing Workgroup, a body that will make
public policy recommendations to expand the availability of safe and affordable workforce housing for all Floridians.
I’m pleased to announce that the Florida Association of Counties has designated me as their appointee to this important group!
Through my service on the Coordinating Council of Broward, the Homeless Continuum of Care Board, and other human services organizations,
I have seen clearly that affordable housing is essential for the wellbeing and productivity of individuals and families. It is meaningful
and appropriate that Broward County will have a seat at the table for these discussions. Broward is one of the most cost-burdened metropolitan
areas in the United States. In fact, South Florida ranks #1 in the gap between low wages and high cost of housing!
The fourteen-member Workgroup is comprised of public officials as well as specialists in housing financing, development, and construction.
Together, we will seek to identify opportunities to coordinate state, regional, and local efforts affecting the affordability of housing and to
develop strategies that comprehensively address the housing, economic, and social needs of Floridians. It is my sincere hope that our recommendations
lead to meaningful, lasting solutions to our housing crisis.
The Workgroup is legislatively mandated to submit its recommendations to the Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker
of the House of Representatives by January 1, 2018.
Your input is both welcomed and appreciated. If you have ideas or suggestions about affordable workforce housing that you’d like to see put into action,
please share them with me by contacting my office at (954) 357-7001 or emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
It is a pleasure to serve as Commissioner for District 1, and I look forward to providing you with updates on our Workgroup recommendations.
