The LaMarca Letter

 January 2015

Dear Broward County Residents,

I look towards 2015 with great optimism and working together with our local, state and federal partners to accomplishing our shared goals. The expansion of Port Everglades is among the top priorities for Broward County. The project to widen and deepen our port will increase our cargo capacity by accommodating the larger ships in transit as a consequence of the expansion of the Panama Canal. The economic impact of the project is estimated to bring $500 million to the region. Port Everglades unveiled a renovated Cruise Terminal 4 with 50 new check-in counters, loading bridges, new escalators and elevators, enhanced lighting and 172 additional parking spaces. This $24-million remodel will provide faster boarding and departing for passengers. Higher traffic is expected once the adjacent slip is widened in 2016 designed to accommodate larger ships. Port Everglades is the second busiest cruise port in the world.

We had a lively discussion on UBER and transportation network companies (TNCs) operations in Broward County. After 2 hours of public comment we heard from Uber drivers, citizens who use Uber, taxi cab drivers, representatives from both Uber and taxi cab companies. The county will draft the proposed regulations that will incorporate TNC’s into the Motor Carriers Ordinance. I am encouraged that we can offer visitors and residents many different transportation options while maintaining the safety and welfare of the people.

We will continue to work with our consultants on the expansion of the convention center and the headquarter hotel. We have an opportunity to recapture over $60 million in lost business annually and also expand our convention business when we discuss plans to utilize the entire site. The Resident's Guide to Government provides a convenient resource to help people stay connected to their local government. It includes contact information for County officials and Federal, State, and local agencies. Visitors can Stay Connected by subscribing to E-news and social media sites.
