2013 - Spring Forward

I do not know about you, but it seems hard to believe we are ready to “Spring Forward” on March 10th; as we adjust our clocks, watches, and other time pieces to Eastern Daylight Saving Time and end Eastern Standard Time. Also on March 20th, we actually usher in The First Day of Spring 2013 as the Vernal Equinox occurs.

The County Commission continues to focus on Broward’s local economic engines: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Port Everglades, and the Hospitality/Tourism sectors.

Recently the Commission broke ground at Port Everglades on the new Intermodal Container Transfer Facility. This is the nation’s only combined on-port international and domestic cargo rail facility positioning Broward County as a global gateway for international trade. The state also committed $13 million to begin work on the Southport Turning Notch Extension project, which will add more dock space for Port Everglades.

I am sure many of you have seen the massive construction project at FLL, the new South Runway, when driving to, from, and/or by the airport. However, a webcam is now available at fll.net to view the construction progress of the expanded South Runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. There are three cameras with different views of the future 8,000 foot long elevated runway. The cameras take photos every 15 minutes.

One camera overlooks the construction of the future tunnels over US 1 and the Florida East Coast Railroad. The second camera shows the midsection of the runway. The third camera provides a west view of the runway. Features of the webcam include zoom, toggle, and time-lapse.

The $791 million expanded South Runway is part of an overall $2 billion Capital Improvement Program that includes the redevelopment/expansion of Terminal 4 and a Terminal Modernization Program. For updates on airport programs and services, go to Twitter@FLLFlyer, or visit fll.net.

The Commission’s prudent fiscal planning and economic management strategies have also bolstered the County’s hospitality and tourism industries. Hotel/motel occupancy rates and corresponding bed-tax collections are at levels not realized since the 2008 fiscal crisis throughout those sectors Also of late; this destination has had Chamber of Commerce perfect weather while the rest of the country and Canada have frigid temperatures and conditions, so that has been a factor in our economic recovery equation as well.

Let me also take this opportunity to wish those who celebrate it, a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day. In addition warmest wishes for the duration of the Passover holidays and a Happy Easter.
