Fall is here and soon the weather will be cooler and much more conducive to outside activities. I’m pleased to report that all Broward County parks and Natural Areas are now open seven days a week, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If you’ll recall county parks were closed mid-week in order to balance the county budget without raising property taxes. An overhaul of parks operations has allowed us to save money and keep parks open. This includes West Lake Park/Anne Kolb Nature Center and Hollywood North Beach Park in Hollywood and C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines.

ENERGY SENSE Appliance Rebate Program
Now is the time to trash that old appliance and take advantage of a new program that provides rebates to Broward residents and businesses. The ENERGY SENSE Appliance Rebate Program encourages replacement of an old appliance with a new more energy efficient appliance. Up to $400,000 is available in rebates. The County expects 1,200 to 2,000 rebates to be issued to residents and 100 to 450 rebates to businesses. I encourage you to register as soon as possible as rebates will be available on a first come, first served basis. You can pre-register at www.broward.org/gogreen or call 954-357-7328. Applications are due by November 4.
Broward County Redistricting
As required by the Broward County Charter, the Broward County Commission has initiated the process for preparing a new district map based on the 2010 Census data. The public is invited to participate in the process by attending a public workshop and by submitting maps of their own for the Commission's consideration. On Monday, October 3 a workshop is scheduled at the Anne Kolb Nature Center, 751 Sheridan Street in Hollywood from 5-7 p.m. Proposed district maps can be viewed at www.broward.org/redistricting.
The Jewish High Holiday of Yom Kippur, also known as Day of Atonement is observed on October 8. For those of the Jewish faith it is the holiest day of the year. I wish you an easy fast.
