A Message From Broward County Commissioner
Barbara Sharief

Each year, Broward County joins the National Association of Counties in celebrating April as National County Government Month. The theme this year is "Safe and Secure Counties" with a focus on strengthening the safety and security of all communities. In order to remain healthy, vibrant, safe and economically competitive, Broward County provides a number of services including economic development, emergency management, court administration, human services, and the life-saving regional 9-1-1 emergency dispatch system.

It all starts with a solid economic foundation. Broward County maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state and nation, due in part to economic development initiatives that bring quality jobs to our community and essential funding for programs that provide for a safe and secure County. An educational exhibit showcasing how County agencies work to keep Broward safe and secure will be featured in the Broward County Governmental Center lobby throughout April. The Government Center is located at 115 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Visit Broward.org/CountiesMatter

I welcome your comments and want to hear which issues are important to you. Send an email to me at Bsharief@Broward.org or call my office at 954-357-7008. Also, check out the Barbara Sharief Facebook page at Facebook.com/barbara.sharief or follow Barbara Sharief at Twitter.com/bestmom39.

White House Visit for Women’s History Month

I was honored to be asked to attend the Women’s History Month event hosted by President Obama in Washington D.C. I enjoyed seeing the President and now I can actually say I have had dinner at the White House. We were able to visit the various rooms unobstructed and I sat in all of my favorite chairs! I saw the beginning of the cherry blossoms blooming and had a great conversation with many fabulous women including my great friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

April is Kite Flying Month at AARLCC

This month, the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is taking to the skies with the culture and craft of kite making and kite flying! Kite making workshops will be held on Monday, April 11th from 3 to 7:30PM and on Saturday, April 16th from 11AM to 5PM. All materials will be provided. After participants finish assembling their kites on Saturday, they will be invited to walk to an adjoining field and fly the kites. Call 954-357-6210 for more information.

Around The Community

I attended the jobs announcement for Lufthansa Technik with Governor Rick Scott and the Miramar City Commission. This aviation maintenance company has been in the county for 10 years. They have 90 employees and are adding another 100 jobs. Awesome for Broward!

I also had a fabulous time speaking at the 23rd Anniversary of Emmanuel Apostolic Church. They have been a pillar of the community for many years. Bishop Ernest & Lady Ivett McDonald are simply amazing. Thank you to guest pastor, Dr. Mark Hanby for your inspiring words.
