A Message From Broward Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief

Happy Black History Month! Although we have an African American president, many young people are not aware of the sacrifices and struggles that those before them have made to be where we are today. We can’t take this accomplishment as an end point, however. We should use this opportunity to reach even greater heights. It’s easy to take the rights we have for granted if we don’t remember the determination that earlier generations showed, all of us have the potential to forget them. As the world continues to diversify with groups of many different origins, cultures and creeds, it is as important as ever to celebrate the histories that make up the collective account of our nation. It is important that we reflect and celebrate the monumental contributions and use them as a platform for future growth.

I welcome your comments and want to hear which issues are important to you. Send an email to me at Bsharief@broward.org or call my office at 954-357-7008. Also, check out the Barbara Sharief Facebook page at Facebook.com/barbara.sharief or follow Barbara Sharief at Twitter.com/bestmom39.

2016 Capacity Building Conference – Strategic Pathways to Growth – March 4-5 at the Broward County Convention Center 2016

Hosted by the Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development, this is a two-day event promising new insights and an inclusive opportunity to connect in a stimulating setting. Featuring local and nationally recognized experts. This event supports the Broward County Board of County Commissioners’ vision and value of a “vibrant economy with a diverse, skilled workforce, in a County offering unique advantages that attract all types of businesses to create equitable, countywide prosperity” and “ensuring economic opportunities for all people and businesses in Broward.” For details and to register, visit CapacityBuilding.Broward.org

The Bridge Church

I attended many services at the Florida Bible Church in Miramar to celebrate their new name change. They are now called the Bridge Church which I love. Each service was unique and their music was amazing. Their children’s choir preformed at all 3 services and did a fantastic job.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

I had a wonderful time celebrating a man who had the courage to stand for justice and freedom and help change the direction of a nation - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I started the day in West Park at their parade and then attended another parade and community concert at Lakeshore Park in Miramar. It is humbling to know where we came from and it reminds us of how far we still need to go.
