A Message from Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief

I am proud to announce the Business Loan Seminar Series, which is a primary component of my “Broward Means Business” initiative designed to increase awareness about the state of Florida’s loan programs for the benefit of small businesses. Attendees can expect to leave the seminar with a working knowledge of Florida’s State Small Business Credit Initiative, including an overview of the two primary programs – Florida Venture Capital Program and the Small Business Loan Support Program. The Florida Venture Capital Program targets emerging companies in the state with long-term growth potential. The Small Business Loan Support Program provides small businesses with tools to access commercial banks and export financing. There will be free seminars conducted by subject matter experts, such as the South Florida Regional Council, SBA, and Metro Broward Capital Corporation throughout Broward County in May and June:

Autism in Flight

Mayor Sharief and the Rising Tide Car Wash teamWe have been busy planning the second annual “Autism in Flight” program. A trip to the airport can be an intimidating experience for anyone. For autistic children and their families it can be downright frightening. When I was contacted by a family in my district with an autistic child and learned of the potential challenges they faced when using airports, I embarked on an effort to change that for all kids. This exercise is a learning experience to help reduce everyone’s level of stress and make traveling a more pleasurable experience. If these children and their families know what to expect, they’ll be more prepared and at ease; the same goes for airport personnel. During the event, children will board a JetBlue aircraft and there will be a mock flight. The plane won’t actually take-off, but announcements will be made and the children and families will be served “in-flight” snacks and beverages.

As part of my Broward Means Business initiative, we recognized the wonderful Rising Tide Car Wash in Parkland. After that, they were featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Rising Tide Car Wash employs adults with autism. The co-founder, John D’Eri was inspired to start the business by his son, who has autism. Rising Tide Car Wash currently employs 35 adults.
