Presentations Planned During National Cholesterol Awareness Month

September is National Cholesterol Awareness month. Nutritionist Michelle Stewart will be leading one-on-one nutritional consultations and presentations this month. Some presentations will focus on cholesterol -- the good and the bad. Michelle will cover the 411 on Fad Diets at Governmental Center on Wednesday, September 25.

A higher blood cholesterol level puts you at a greater risk of developing heart disease or suffering from a heart attack. Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that builds up on the walls of arteries often referred to as hardening of the arteries. These arteries, which carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart, become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is decreased or blocked. Chest pain may occur when blood and oxygen cannot reach the heart. If the blood supply is completely cut off by blockage, the result is a heart attack. Learn to manage your cholesterol.

Health Fairs and AngioScreenings

There are two more Health Fairs that employees can attend and, if enrolled in Humana health, get a free health screening (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.)

In addition, AngioScreenings, which are painless, noninvasive screenings for heart disease and stroke are also available. Within minutes, you receive a colored picture of your ultrasound along with an opportunity to review the results. The AngioScreening cost is $50; an abdominal aorta screening is available for an additional $40. Cash, check or credit card will be accepted on site. Schedule an AngioScreening by calling 1-866-782-9432.

Congratulations to Transit Copans Employees

Earlier this year, the Walking Work Station was relocated from the Governmental Center to Transit Copans. On-site Wellness Captain Bob Nie has done an excellent job in motivating employees to get engaged in the many wellness programs provided by the County. The participation and number of steps far exceeded anyone’s expectations! Transit Copans surpassed Government Center West with the most miles walked, 24.35 miles with 2,596 calories burned to pass Government Center West’s 23.16 miles.
