Broward County Joins STAR Communities
Broward County is now part of STAR (Sustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating) Communities. STAR is advancing a national framework for sustainable communities by delivering standards and tools built by and for local governments and the communities they serve. The primary goal is to empower communities to plan a direct path toward a sustainable future.
STAR will be the first national, consensus-based rating system designed to evaluate, quantify and improve the livability and sustainability in U.S. communities.
Broward County will have an opportunity to test the system for managing sustainability, share best practices with other pilot communities and achieve an outstanding sustainability rating. Points will be accumulated for local government actions and community level outcomes across a broad range of sustainability goals for such aspects in:
- Climate and energy
- Water quality
- Public health
- Natural systems
Broward County’s participation in the STAR pilot program allows for benchmarking of our sustainability efforts against other communities. This is an opportunity to nationally showcase the County’s work and influence other local governments around the country that are also working to increase the health, resource efficiency, and climate resilience of their communities.
