New Mayor and Vice Mayor Chosen in Broward County

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners has chosen District 8 Commissioner Barbara Sharief to serve as Mayor and District 7 Commissioner Tim Ryan to serve as Vice Mayor for 2014. In the 2013 State of the County Address, outgoing Mayor Kristin Jacobs declared that the state of Broward County is “strong.” The address showcased Broward County’s accomplishments over the past year including improvements in transportation and the environment, and successes at Port Everglades, the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. County Launches Responsive Design Website and Twitter News Feed
Broward County has unveiled a new and improved design for their official website, The new design provides more direct links to County information, programs and services; fewer images for quicker load times, and a “responsive design” that automatically adjusts to different devices, including smaller mobile and tablet devices, without losing functionality. The home page also features a live feed from the County’s new Twitter account,, and quick links and subscription opportunities to more than 50 County agency eNewsletters; Facebook, Twitter and You Tube accounts; and mobile apps. BCT Recognized as 2013 Public Transportation System of the Year
Broward County Transit (BCT) was recognized by the Florida Public Transportation Association as the 2013 Outstanding Public Transportation System of the Year. The award honors a public transportation system, which has demonstrated achievement in efficiency and effectiveness based on quantitative and qualitative transit industry measures such as safety, operations, customer service, financial management, policy and administration. Free Movies and TV to go from Your Library
Broward County Libraries recently introduced IndieFlix, a new streaming video service that lets users choose from thousands of independent movies and TV shows that are streamed instantly over the Internet – at no cost. Library customers use their library card number to log in and view shorts, documentaries and feature films from over 50 countries. Enjoy film festival favorites from Sundance, Cannes and Tribeca as well as vintage TV shows, network movies, cult classics, music and concert films and more. You can view titles on Xbox, PC, MAC, Smartphone, Tablet, and Roku streaming player. Indieflix requires Internet Explorer 10 or above, Chrome, Firefox or Safari Internet browser for optimal results. Broward County government offices will be closed on Wednesday, December 25, for the Christmas Holiday and Wednesday, January 1, for New Year's. Residents who are interested in visiting our libraries and Parks or using Broward County Transit should contact those agencies directly to confirm exceptions to operating hours.
