Photo Focus: Port Everglades
The holidays are upon us and Broward County’s Port Everglades is bustling with cruise travelers and holiday cheer. The Port is ranked among the top three busiest cruise ports in the world. More than 701,000 passengers, approximately 20 percent of the Port’s cruise business, will set sail during the holiday season on 38 ships from 10 different cruise lines plus ferry service to Freeport, Grand Bahama. New Pompano Beach Library Opening Soon
A new $19M state-of-the-art County Library will soon open its doors at 50 West Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach. The library’s contemporary design reflects library operations in an information age. It features a well-equipped Electronic Media Lab where patrons will have access to computers, free Wi-Fi and electrical outlets. Customers can access iPads for public use in work stations throughout the library and young adults can explore digital media and creativity at the new Teen Tech Studio. There is a cultural center with an open performance space on the upper level and media production facilities on the ground level. The library is 27,000-square-feet and the entire structure (library and cultural center) is 46,000-square-feet. The library was built in partnership with the City of Pompano Beach. A Great Gift Idea for the Community
This is the season of giving and volunteering for a community cleanup project is a great gift to residents living in the Broward Municipal Services District. Help beautify Broward County! There are two opportunities this month, Saturday, December 2nd at Franklin Community Park, 2501 Franklin Park Drive, Fort Lauderdale and Saturday, December 16th at Boulevard Gardens Community Center, 313 NW 28th Terrace, Fort Lauderdale. Both events are from 8AM-noon and cleanup gloves, bags and safety vests will be provided. Community service hours are available for students. More...

New BARC Facility Coming Spring 2018
The Broward Addiction Recovery Center will soon have a new home with space to accommodate more people in a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide the best care available for those in need of substance abuse treatment. The new two-story, 49,000-square-foot facility located at 325 SW 28th Street in Fort Lauderdale, will open early spring. The center is approximately 72 percent larger than the current facility and will have 47 percent more detoxification beds. The BARC facility comes at a critical time when drug overdose deaths in the United States have reached an all-time high and addiction treatment becomes essential. According to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office, in 2016, 582 people overdosed on drugs in Broward County. Visit Broward.org/AddictionRecovery.

Binge Watch Your Favorite TV Shows
County Libraries now offer an innovative new device, the GoChip, that lets library card holders stream hit TV shows on a phone or other mobile device. The GoChip lets you take a full season of premiere TV shows with you wherever you go. No more using up your data to watch your favorite programs. You and your family and friends can also watch different episodes on eight different devices simultaneously. Broward County Libraries is the first library in Florida, the first in the Southeast and one of the first 12 libraries nationwide currently offering the GoChip to customers. More...

Homeless Point-In-Time Count Needs You
Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership, in collaboration with the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Broward Sheriff’s Office and Nova Southeastern University is seeking 400 volunteers to assist the Homeless Continuum of Care with the collection of data for the 2018 Homeless Point-in-Time Count Survey. The count will take place on Tuesday night, January 23rd, through Wednesday, January 24, 2018. Volunteers are required to attend an orientation session that will cover the survey tools, enumerator training, safety, and coordination procedures and regulations. Register now! Holiday Cheer at FLL
It’s the most wonderful time of the year at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport! More than 1,400 students comprising 35 groups from Broward County elementary, middle and high schools are performing in the 30th Annual Winter Festival of Music. Beginning on Monday December 11th through Friday, December 15th, from 9AM to Noon, passengers traveling through the airport will enjoy a festive holiday celebration of song and dance. The Festival of Music has become a Broward favorite for travelers and residents.
