FEMA Finalizes New County Flood Maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a Letter of Final Determination notifying unincorporated Broward County and the 31 municipal governments in Broward County that the new flood maps have been finalized. During the next six months, FEMA will disseminate copies of the finalized flood maps and unincorporated Broward County and the municipal governments must adopt the finalized flood maps. The effective date for the new Broward County flood maps will be August 18, 2014. After the effective date, the finalized maps will be used by insurance companies for flood insurance purposes and the updated base flood elevations must be used for all new construction and substantial improvements to existing construction. County to Add Complete Street Elements on Section of Southwest Fourth Avenue
Broward County’s Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division has begun installing and improving Complete Streets elements on Southwest Fourth Avenue between State Road 84 and Southwest Ninth Street that will conclude by mid-October, barring any unforeseen conditions or weather delays. The project entails adding a bike lane as well as repairing the existing sidewalks and curb ramps on the east side of Southwest Fourth Avenue. By relocating the existing curb and gutter toward the west, the green area available for the roots of established trees currently growing along the pavement will be enhanced. More…

Broward County's Homeless Children Need Your Help
Broward County and Kiwanis Division 23 and 24, have partnered once again to host Christmas in July, which provides homeless children, from infants to age 18, with new clothing, socks, shoes and underwear. School aged children also receive school supplies for the upcoming year. Items are matched to each child’s needs and are made possible through the generosity of Broward County residents and County employees. Please donate only new items such as underwear (Toddlers through Teens); shoes, socks, belts, clothing (Newborns through Teens); and diapers, Pull-Ups and baby wipes. Collection boxes are located at select County facilities such as the downtown Governmental Center, Government Center West, Main and Regional Courthouses and at all Broward County Libraries through July 3. County Library Celebrates International Heritage and Culture
During May, explore diverse cultures, histories and heritage as Broward County Library Division celebrates Asian-Pacific Heritage Month, Haitian-American Heritage Month and Cinco de Mayo. Take a global tour without leaving your hometown, as Broward County Library readies for a month filled with the sights and sounds of Mexico, the Caribbean and the countries and cultures of Asia and the Pacific. Small Business Administration to Provide Assistance to Residents
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has declared Broward County a disaster area following the cold weather that occurred January 7-31, 2014, allowing small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations of all sizes opportunities for assistance. According to the SBA, the loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates of 2.625 percent for private non-profit organizations of all sizes and 4 percent for small businesses, with terms up to 30 years. The SBA determines eligibility based on the size of the applicant, type of activity and its financial resources.
