Photo Focus: Port Everglades
It’s smooth sailing this cruise season as Broward County’s Port Everglades prepares for the return of the world’s premier cruise ships to their winter home in Broward County. New to the fleet of 40 ships are Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas and Costa Cruises Costa Deliziosa. The Port recently received its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the Cruise Terminal 4 renovations which includes the installation of public art by internationally renowned artist Dale Chihuly, pictured above. Uber and Lyft Resume Service in Broward
Uber and Lyft resumed operations in Broward last month after County Commissioners approved new regulations designed to accommodate Transportation Network Companies (TNCs), expanding transportation options while establishing measures to protect the public. The approved ordinance requires TNCs to certify to the County that they have conducted state and local driver background checks and have performed vehicle inspections. All for hire vehicles are required to carry liability insurance that meets state standards or has been approved by a state insurance agency. The new law also stipulates that TNCs would not hire drivers convicted of criminal offenses relating to sex crimes along with a comprehensive list of specific violent felonies. More...

Transit Improves Bus Service
Increased frequency and new stops for some 95 Express routes are among the latest service improvements by Broward County Transit. Route 36 and two Express routes now offer more frequent service in response to increased demand by customers, and connection to Miami’s Metrorail during morning and afternoon rush hour is now available on several 95 Express routes. Storybook Festival Celebrates Rudyard Kipling
Families and children of all ages are invited to the free 14th Annual Storybook Festival on Saturday, November 14th, 10AM - 4:30PM, at the Southwest Regional Library, 16835 Sheridan Street, Pembroke Pines. The theme is “Just So... A Tribute to Author Rudyard Kipling” in honor of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Enjoy a fairy tale adventure in the Fantasy Forest, storytelling, music, arts and crafts, face-painting, costume characters and more. Animal Care Has Record Saving Year
Broward’s Animal Care ended the 2015 fiscal year with many major accomplishments including an increased live release rate, decreased animal intake, and increased license sales. Implementation of new programs and continued engagement within the community led to a 6 percent increase in the release live rate, while shelter intake decreased. Visit Broward.org/Animal. More...

Securing Vacant Properties Provides Safety in our Communities
Broward County Code Enforcement and the Broward Sheriff’s Office have intensified collaborative efforts to eradicate blight in the Broward Municipal Services District neighborhoods of Boulevard Gardens, Broadview Park, Franklin Park, Roosevelt Gardens and Washington Park. Without intervention, vacant properties often become a magnet for trespassers, trash and criminal activity. For college-bound students, taking the SAT or ACT exams can be filled with anxiety.
To help students prepare and approach the test taking process with greater confidence,
Broward County Libraries are offering FREE SAT and ACT prep classes. The program sessions span a five week period, with a session taught one night per week for two hours. Pre-registration is required at regional library locations, including Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines, Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs, Main Library in Fort Lauderdale and South Regional Library in Pembroke Pines.
