Broward Commissioners Approve FY2014 Budget
Broward Commissioners have adopted a budget for fiscal year 2014. The FY14 budget, which includes tax supported and non-tax supported funds, is $4.1 billion. The approved budget decreases by $151.8 million from the current FY13 budget and is reflective of an improving economy. The budget continues Broward County services at their current levels. The proposed total (tax supported and non-tax supported) millage rate includes a slight increase of .17 mills  or less than 20 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, due to the shift of public safety call taking and dispatch costs from Broward cities to the County. K9 Water Festivals Return to County Water Parks
Grab Fido and make your way to the County's water festivals which will be held the first three weekends in October. The first two Water Festival weekends will be celebrated October 5-6 and 12-13 at Castaway Island at TY Park in Hollywood. On October 19-20, bring your four-legged friend to Splash Adventure at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. UPDATE: Airport Expansion and new Service at FLL
The community received an update on construction projects at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) at a recent Commission meeting. The presentation highlighted the progress on the runway expansion and noted that the first concrete has been poured on the runway and 60 percent of the embankment is in place. View Video.

As the runway expansion continues, airlines also continue to expand services at FLL. Starting December 14, Air Canada will service nonstop flights to FLL from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The weekly seasonal service will run through the end of April 2014. Air Canada will fly the modern, 97-seat Embraer E 190 aircraft. Flights will operate from Terminal 2. County Libraries Host Affordable Care Act Workshops
Do you need information on your healthcare insurance options for 2014? Broward County Libraries will host a series of Affordable Care Act workshops, presented by the national education offices of the League of Women Voters and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The workshops will run from October 2 through November 16 at Broward County Library locations throughout the County. Each includes a presentation, informational hand-outs and a Q&A session. County Receives Grant of More than $1.1 Million to Assist Homeless
The Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership has been awarded a grant of more than $1.1 million by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the 2012 HUD Continuum of Care Program. The County will use the additional awards to fund 21 projects totaling more than $10.1 million. These projects focus on housing and services in support of 1,182 beds in Broward County for eligible homeless clients. These new funds will create 22 new permanent supportive housing beds for chronically homeless persons through a partnership with the City of Fort Lauderdale. More…
