More than 400,000 travelers are expected to fly in and out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The holiday period runs from Thursday, May 24, to Wednesday, May 30. The Broward County Aviation Department anticipates an average of 66,000 passengers a day during the seven-day travel period and expects the busiest travel days to be Thursday, May 24, and Friday, May 25. In preparation for the upcoming hurricane season, Broward County Emergency Management Division conducted a hurricane exercise, in conjunction with the Statewide Hurricane Gispert 2012 Exercise. The Gispert Exercise focused on the response to a major Category 4 hurricane impacting the State of Florida and included participants from the County, municipalities and other partnering organizations that provide Emergency Support Functions during an emergency response. The exercise, which was conducted on May 24, at the Broward Emergency Operations Center, complies with exercise guidance set forth by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program and provided experiential training essential for hurricane preparedness. |

Starting on Tuesday, May 29, Broward County Transit will introduce the 595 Express Bus service, with two routes from the Sunrise park-and-ride located at the BankAtlantic Center to downtown Miami/Brickell Avenue and downtown Fort Lauderdale. The fare will be free to all passengers the first week, May 29 through June 1, 2012. At 7:30 a.m., the public is invited to "ride-along" with the passengers on the downtown Fort Lauderdale route and from 4 to 6 p.m, enjoy a "meet and greet" with light refreshments. More... |
