Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded on Friday, March 11. The magnitude-8.9 quake spawned a deadly tsunami that slammed into the nation's east coast, leaving a huge swath of devastation in its wake. Many people are feared dead and many more are still missing or injured. A number of organizations are assisting.

Make a Donation

The American Red Cross has mobilized resources, in coordination with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state Emergency Operation Centers across the U.S. Individuals who want to help with monetary donations can:

  • Visit and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami
  • Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to help those in the affected areas

Connect with Family and Friends

  • The American Red Cross has launched a special Family Links Web site to help people seeking to re-establish contact with family members and friends. Visit

  • AT&T has implemented international calling and texting support efforts for U.S. residential wireless and wireline customers trying to connect with loved ones in Japan. Beginning March 11 through March 31, AT&T wireless postpaid customers will not be charged for international long distance usage from the U.S. and Puerto Rico to Japan; nor for text messages to Japan, originated from a U.S. wireless number.
