This study focuses on the economic benefits realized by marina managers who have implemented management measures at their marinas. The study was limited to 25 marinas.
Since 2000, the Florida Clean Marina Program and the Clean Boating Partnership have offered resources and expertise to assist Florida’s marine industry in protecting the environment while benefiting the industry.
Listed below are accomplishments of the Florida Clean Marina Program and the Clean Boating Partnership.
- Approximately 60,000 oil absorbing bilge socks have been distributed to the public, keeping thousands of gallons of oil out of the water.
- Preventative Fuel Spill Kits have been given to 150 marinas.
- Nearly 20,000 children’s life jackets have been fitted and distributed at outreach events.
- More than 300,000 clean boating habits brochures and handbooks have been distributed to the public.
- More than 25,000 pounds of material and 75,000 gallons of oil have been recycled.

The Florida Green Lodging Program was established in 2004 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with the intent of recognizing and rewarding environmentally conscientious lodging facilities in the state. Through this rapidly growing program DEP encourages the lodging industry to conserve and protect Florida's natural resources. The Florida Green Lodging Program is unique in that it covers an all-inclusive list of environmental initiatives that are specific to protecting and preserving Florida's environment. Right now there are 38 certified green lodgings in Broward County.
The Florida Green Lodging Program is administered primarily online. To become designated, facilities must conduct a thorough property assessment and implement a specified number of environmental practices in six areas of sustainable operations:

- Waste Reduction, Reuse and Recycling
- Water Conservation
- Energy Efficiency

Subway franchise owner Steve Kaplan is saving by taking advantage of energy-efficient technologies at his restaurant in Norman, OK. Kaplan upgraded his store’s lighting from 40-watt T-12 lamps and magnetic ballasts to T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts. In addition to his 50-percent energy savings, he now has brighter lighting. Kaplan replaced his old air-conditioning units with high-efficiency models and added ceiling fans to circulate the store’s air. Check temperature Settings
If settings are lower than necessary, chances are you are wasting energy. The most common recommended settings are between -14 degrees and -8 degrees Fahrenheit for freezers and between 35 degrees and 38 degrees Fahrenheit for refrigerators.
Clean Cooling Coils
Dirt accumulation impairs proper heat transfer and lowers the efficiency and capacity of refrigerators.
Check Door Seals
Tight seals and properly closing doors prevent warm air from entering the unit, which reduces cooling energy and prevents frost buildup. Use this rule of thumb: If you can easily slide a dollar bill into the seal, have the seal adjusted.
Perform any scheduled maintenance on the units and keep evaporator coils clean and free of ice build-up.

EPA's GreenChill Program
EPA estimates that GreenChill partners’ refrigerant emissions are 50 percent lower than the industry average. If every supermarket in the nation reduced their emissions to the average GreenChill store rate of 12 percent, the industry would save more than $100 million in refrigerant costs alone annually, while saving the equivalent of 22 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and 240 tons of ozone-depleting substances every year. Energy Performance Project at Broward County Water & Wastewater Services
The Energy Performance Project at Water & Wastewater Services is being implemented in order to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs associated with critical water/wastewater operations. The current study phase of the project includes developing conservation and optimization strategies for water/wastewater treatment and transmission, and on-site conversion of waste-to-energy using available resources at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
The WWTP electrical consumption generates an estimated 24,494 tonnes of GHG annually and the combustion of biogas in boilers and flares generates an estimated 6,169 tonnes of GHG. It is estimated that, when completed, this project will reduce GHG emissions at the WWTP by approximately 9,072 tonnes through energy conservation and renewable on-site power generation, which is equivalent to the GHG emissions from the electricity use of 1,101 homes for one year.
North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (NRWWTP) Fine Bubble Conversion Project (PDF)
The liquids treatment at the NRWWTP consists of four secondary treatment modules, each with a design capacity of 20 million gallons per day. Secondary treatment includes aeration and clarification. Each module utilizes an average of 900 HP for normal aeration. This project replaced the 900 HP mechanical aerators with fine bubble diffusers for modules A, B, and D, which operate with 500HP blowers, Estimated reductions: 4,215 tonnes eCO2/ year resulting in an energy savings of 400HP or 2.628 million kWh per year per module. 7,884,000 kWh/year $788,400 cost savings
