SR 84 GreenwayThe New River Greenway is the location of one of Broward County's oldest bicycle and pedestrian paths. Enhancements and upgrades to the path, including better separation from the busy I-595 corridor, would provide a bicycle and pedestrian friendly corridor linking Markham Park and Broward's western conservation area to Port Everglades. The greenway would also reestablish bicycle and pedestrian links to the College/University complex in Davie which were lost when I-595 was constructed.

Broward County's Markham Park would anchor the greenway in western Broward, providing a rich resource for trail users including camping, picnicking, mountain biking trails, playgrounds and other facilities. Connections to the Conservation Levee Greenway and the scenic Everglades would be made to the north and west through Markham Park. From Markham Park to University Drive, the existing multipurpose trail would be relocated from the south to the north bank of the New River Canal providing a much needed separation from I-595 traffic.

At University Drive, the greenway would shift to the south side of SR 84 utilizing wide sidewalks to Davie Road. The greenway would rejoin the New River Canal north of SR 84 at a new trailhead at Sewell Lock. Sewell Lock is Broward County's oldest water control structure completed in 1912 and recognized in National Register of Historic Places. From there, the "missing link" project, currently being designed by Broward County and scheduled for construction in 2001/2002, will provide a bicycle and pedestrian path to the east across SR 7. A unique feature of this project will be a bridge suspended from the SR 7 overpass.

East of SR 7, the greenway would utilize wide sidewalks along the north side of SR 84 to its final destination in Port Everglades. Along this section of the greenway, Broward County's Secret Woods Park, which has a nature center, boardwalk and other resources, offers trail users a place for quiet reflection in one of Broward's most urbanized areas. Ft. Lauderdale's 92 acre Synder Park also provides an excellent trailhead with bicycle and hiking trails, picnicking areas, restrooms, swimming, a dog walking area and other facilities.

An alternate route to the south would utilize wide sidewalks through the Port 95 Commerce Center and then along the southern border of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Along this southern route, the spectacular Airport Greenbelt provides, trails, lush tropical vegetation and views of the south airport runway. East of the airport, the trail would follow the Florida Power and Light easement north through Port Everglades.
