NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in the installation and maintenance of electronic traffic control devices.
Work involves assembling, installing, servicing, testing, repairing and adjusting electrical and mechanical components of traffic signal and related equipment. Employees install and maintain pole lines and overhead traffic signs. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written instructions and may be accompanies by detailed plans. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior who reviews work for accuracy and desired results.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Assembles and installs traffic detectors, signal heads, controllers, amplifiers, relays, and associated aerial and underground wiring; tests and adjusts components as required.
Participates in the erection and construction of electrical power circuits and associated equipment; maintains and repairs electrical circuits.
Performs preventive maintenance on traffic signals; cleans and oils controller mechanisms, checks relays; replaces signal bulbs and lenses.
Responds to emergency calls relative to traffic signal malfunctions during regular working hours and specified standby periods.
Installs and maintains overhead traffic signs; operates necessary equipment required for the installation of traffic control devices.
May operate various vehicles as required for maintenance and installation of traffic control devices.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
Knowledge of the principles of electrical, electromechanical, and electronic theory as related to work assignments.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in electrical work.
Ability to read and interpret typical wiring diagrams.
Ability to work from moderate heights and to work outdoors for extended periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment, and materials employed in the work.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Successful completion of job related tests. Two (2) years experience in electrical maintenance work desired.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
A valid Florida Driver's License is required.
Possession of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
