TRAFFIC CONTROL WORKER I

NATURE OF WORK

This is work specializing in the maintenance of traffic control devices and the application of pavement markings.

Work involves installing, removing and repairing traffic signs, applying street markings. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision although recurring work assignments may be carried on under general supervision. Assignments include the operation of motorized spray equipment, air compressors and paint striping machines. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Erects, replaces and repairs traffic control devices, paints street markings and stripes for barrier lines, center lines, crosswalks and related activities.

Applies pavement marking stencils, regulates compressor, and prepares paint for application.

Uses a variety of equipment such as spray painting equipment, air compressors and striping machines.

Inspects assigned area for damaged or worn signs and markings and reports to superior. Basic lay out for stop bars, crosswalks.

May operate various vehicles as required for maintenance and installation of traffic control devices.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in installing traffic control devices and painting traffic control lines.

Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary precautions of traffic device installation work.

Some knowledge of the adaptabilities and limitations of various kinds of paints and other surfacing materials utilized on the various types of pavements and street compositions.

Some knowledge of operational characteristics, maintenance and repair needs of motorized equipment used in traffic maintenance activities.

Some knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Some knowledge of basic mathematics.

Ability to understand and implement instructional diagrams, written and oral instructions.

Ability to understand and implement instructional diagrams, written and oral instructions.

Ability to read blue prints.

Ability to anticipate routine equipment maintenance needs.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform tasks assigned.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Successful completion of job related tests.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

A valid Florida Driver's license is required.

Possession of a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
